I've had a hard time learning about color values. The easiest way I have found to do this is to take a digital photo, download and then convert it to a black and white pictures. You can tell right away where the darks and lights are and if you need to move something.
Here is a sample of what I did for the scrappy log cabin. I just wasn't at all sure the values were going to be distinctive enough.

I have a hard time with color too. I cannot match em to save my life. I find the dots on the selvage help me match fabrics

If you have a printer that also copies, you can place your strips on it and make a black and white copy. It will also show the color values and if your computer isn't near your seweing area, you can take the printed copy to the area where you sew.

many people use gray-scales to 'see' value. i never thought of just a black & white pic, but i've copied my fabrics and printed in grayscale to see the values. sometimes we have to get away from the 'color' in order to see the value of a collection :) great tip! thank you!

I use black and white because my printer has a copy color, and a copy black and white button. It is easy to just push teh copy black and whte button. I know all printers aren't the same, you might have to just play with it.

This is a great tip, but if this is not handy for you, I use a Ruby Beholder, which is a red plastic rectangle you look through. Any thing red will do, I have used the lid to a red candy bowl. The red plastic 3D glasses will work.
