Superb idea! A beginner's kit! What to put inside is a whole 'nother thread! I would definitely let her choose the fabric to ensure enthusiasm to finish.

Your idea is a wonderful gift idea! PS: Maybe a quilting care package each month would be something to look forward to for her. I was going to suggest the double slice too. The idea of a regular time to spend together makes the gift last longer and you both get to enjoy the process. I like the depression block but would suggest not using the original size of 3 7/8, which is not an easy cut to make and may discourage rather than encourage a young quilter. What a joy that you have a grand who is interested in quilting. Lead her gently. |
Maybe you could send her pictures of several simple quilt designs and let her choose the one she likes. She could also choose her favorite colors. Another idea, what about doing a mystery quilt with her where each week, you give her a different block to make & when all are complete, you give her the pattern & let her assemble it.

I would suggest maybe the Turning Twenties quilt pattern and she could pick out her favorite fabric colors.

A lot of very nice ideas you quilters have given. A spinoff from the posts, I may give her a pattern and let her pick out the fabric with me along. I know she likes pink. Thanks all.

You’ve probably already decided on a pattern but I thought of the Zig Zag Zoom pattern that is a free download. I like it for beginners...1) It’s easy. And 2) typically, teens typically pick out large print fabric so this pattern really showcases it. Here is the one I made. It is the second quilt featured

What about giving her something extra...a three ring binder of short cuts. Different ways to make HSQ and chart how to cut fab for correct size, fly geese several ways, how to calculate binding, how to make specific blocks such as hour glass, attic windows, tilted blocks, etc.
