This is a Crabapple Hill Design called Winter Wishes. This is done with crayon tinting. This was so much fun to make. This tote is a Christmas present for my sister who loves snowmen. This is a first time for posting pictures.

Crayon tinting is a technique that adds shade and dimension to your project. You start out by tracing your design with a light box on fabric that has been prewashed and then you fill in your areas with crayons (coloring) and then you take an iron with a paper towel on top of the coloring to melt the wax in the fabric. Then you are ready to embroider.

That is so cute! Wouldn't mind using one like that myself! Great job. :) Did you color the block before embroidering?

Yes, I did! And even hubby said that he would color one for me as there is another one in the works! He thought it looked fun!

My mom and her sister did the state flowers blocks like that for their hope chests back in the 1930's, but never finished them. I finished them and put sashing on as HS home ec project. Then we had a homebound lady in town do the quilting for us. This was probably in about 1962 or '63. It has now fallen apart, but was used for many years.

When I did them, I used waxed paper on either side of the fabric when pressing the crayon color to set it. That served to add a little body to the muslin fabric as well.

That is just darling. I would love to try the crayon tinting. I love the effect. The background fabric is great. Thanks for sharing.

I am a big fan of Crabapple hill also and have all the teacup patterns. I have made one of them and color crayon tinted but did it AFTER the embroidery...Next time I will color before, makes more sense!
