Okay--here's the link to the quilt I'm going to make, eventually.
http://www.bonniebluequilts.com/detail.aspx?ID=859

I added 2 more greens and 2 more golds, so NOW I'm good. That is IT! NO MORE!

mgshaw 06-25-2008 02:11 PM

I think you got a pretty good mix! If you find you are needing more when you get ready to work on it, you can always get more!! I like what you got, very pretty!!!
The pattern says they used 60 different fabrics but alot of them are the same color but different print so they look the same from a distance anyway. So I dont think you have to have as many as they did to get the same effect.

beachlady 06-25-2008 02:31 PM

You do such nice work - can't wait to see final quilt - love the pattern.

jbsstrawberry 06-25-2008 02:46 PM

Fantastic pattern and awesome fabric selections!!! You're so good at this!!! I'm with beachlady, can't wait to see this one done!!

rein 06-25-2008 03:10 PM

Love the pattern - but I think mgshaw has a point about the number of different colors for the effect they show. But seems you could do repeats if necessary and it would still be great. I can hardly wait to see what you come up with because I agree with beachlady and jbsstrawberry too - in that you do such lovely work.

barnbum 06-25-2008 03:17 PM

Thanks ladies. :D I thought 30 would be fine--I never expected to try 60 differnt fabrics. If I was using my non CW stash, I'd give it a go, but not if I have to buy it all new. Yikes. Today's group were all small yardage pieces, except for one of the lights.

I will use several lights several times, but even use some darks with darks to make the stars contrast. And I can use the gold and greens with different lights to add more of that color.

OR, I could say I tell myself I need some therapy--or am celebrating the last day of school this year with kids (just have to pack my room tomorrow) to buy more pieces.

Karla, this is going to be a spectacular quilt! Your fabrics are beautiful! Looks complex--you've got your work cut out for you! Is this your "Keep Karla Out of Trouble for the Summer" project? (Yeah, right--like you have time to get into trouble!)

Marcia 06-25-2008 06:35 PM

Karla, your fabrics are gorgeous and that pattern is terrific. That is going to be one gorgeous quilt. I cannot wait for you to get started on it! Be sure to post some pics as you go along.

Even after sharing with Melissa, I still have some CW fabrics I can share. I have browns, blues and reds that may work-if you are interested just PM me your address and I will be happy to send you some fabric too. I think you have plenty of lights. Most quilts from that era are dark, so you do not want too much light in it. Do you have a Ruby Beholder? That will really help you with the contrast of your mediums and darks. I used it when I made my CW quilt.

tlrnhi 06-25-2008 06:51 PM

Karla, the pattern is awesome, the fabric is awesome.
You are going to make one awesome quilt.
Can't wait until you start and show us.
The fabrics really are pretty!!

barnbum 06-26-2008 01:56 AM

Marcia--what's, or should I say who's, Ruby Beholder??? Is she a friend of quilters? I've never met her. :D

I think other than a few greens/golds, I'm good to go. I found one more great--inexpensive site to browse last night.   But you sure are a kind and generous soul to offer to send some fabrics.

Quilt4u 06-26-2008 02:12 AM

That will do just fine. The quilt is going to be verey nice. Love the colors.

Chele 06-26-2008 02:18 AM

That's going to be one gorgeous quilt! Love the pattern and those fabrics are so cool.

Barnbum,

I love civil war fabrics and patterns. One tip I would offer, if I may is to include several blocks made with a pink/shirting and several with a black/shirting. Including those two colors just makes it pop. I'll attach a photo of a mini quilt I'm doing for you to see. I hope it illustrates what I'm trying to say.

Helen

mgshaw 06-26-2008 06:12 AM

Very pretty Helen! How big (little?) is that mini?

LOL Karla! I think you picked some great fabrics - your CW quilt will be another in your line of awesome quilts!
A Ruby Beholder is a piece of
RED plexiglass that you look thru' at your fabrics. It helps, um, sort of 'gray' out the colors, so you can see the differences in value - especially with some of the mediums & darks.

reneebobby 06-26-2008 08:39 AM

Very interesting on the Ruby beholder. As for the quilt oh my just gorgeous can't wait till we get to see it. The fabrics are to die for okay I can go on and on.

So here I'll sit till I see your completed quilt and I can dream about making a great quilt someday.

ripstitch 06-26-2008 09:41 AM

In that picture, 17". I just finished quilting it and its now 16 1/2". I wish the colors showed up better but its due to the lighting in my studio.

Thanks for the compliment, Helen

barnbum 06-26-2008 04:07 PM

Oh jeepers, Helen, I didn't get any pinks or blacks. I wanted to make it manly, hence no pinks, and the darks are so dark in browns I didn't think to get black. But, I see what you mean about the pop. Your piece is cute!! Maybe husband doesn't want to pop. Maybe it'll keep him from sleeping soundly under it?

Did you see my link to the new fabric place I found for CW choices in the Main section? It's this one: http://www.quiltbook.com/CivWarRepo.htm

:D

Marcia 06-27-2008 06:30 AM

Karla, I see someone else answered your Ruby Beholder question before I got back here. (been a little busy with that new baby!!) Thank you for the link to the CW reproduction fabrics. A girl can never have too many in her stash! I may need to order a few more....hmmmmm

ripstitch 06-27-2008 02:37 PM

Karla,

The link you provided is great. The owners of Little Quilts are the ones who shared that tip about pink and black and I use it all the time in scrap quilts. I really like all your fabrics and if you ever get tired of having them around, you can send them my way, lol.

Helen

jacquemoe 06-27-2008 03:41 PM

You go girl! I can't believe you're going to tackle that Civil War pattern. I bet you do a great job. Can't wait to see it.

barnbum 06-27-2008 06:09 PM

So here I'll sit till I see your completed quilt
I strongly advise you to go about your life until you see a photo posted.   Your children could graduate from high school before it's done. :D

Ok, mine are both out of high school. No grandkids, so that lets that out. Hmmm.....how about by the time I get back to the states? Is that long enough??
