Clam scrap

The hurricane Matthew is over with now. We lost power for two nights and a day and it wasn't too bad as the weather was cool. I had my camp stove and was able to make coffee lol and we had battery operated fans so all is will again.
I was going to start to work on my clam ladies. Hubby came in to get the garbage and I had a some little scraps in the garbage that were going. I changed my mind and decided to pick the scraps out of the garbage lol. I was going to try something. I got some old dryer sheets I had saved and used those for a foundation. I started to sew the little scraps on them but instead of sew and turn. I sewed right on top, so I was able to sew any shape and cut wereI needed to fit. I liked them so well, that I started to add the bigger scraps that I was saving and here are some of the blocks. The first two are the tiny scraps that were in the garbage and on a single dryer sheet, the next three are on two dryer sheets sewed together. I just sewed willy nilly and then spray starched them and cut them square. I like this way of sewing lol. I am going to do a blanket stitch over the seam with gold or whatever later. http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...k-t282291.html |
What a fabulous idea!
great, looks like a lot of fun
I like it. You fussy cut kitties are a real plus.

I am going to do lots more as I work on the pickled ladies, I will do a scrap block as I need distraction lol. These are so fun, I would rather be doing the scrap as they are all different and different centers of interest can be included. I do have a bin of scraps that I can dig into, but the ladies have more interesting and colorful fabrics.
I am sewing on my brother quilter machine and it only does a straight stitch, I have two of these machines, I love them so well. they are fast and sew a beautiful straight stitch. I will have to take out my bernina or the janome for the blanket stitch....don't we love our machines? lol |
So this is what willy nilly sewing is supposed to look like! Very nice!
Love it. My oldest (21yo) is a cat lover and misses her Nala and Tori. I found some scrap fabric I want to work into her quilt. Love the clam scrap.
Very nice!!!
I will see if I get a break to take out the other machine to do the decorative stitch, it will make such a difference. I will post when I do one..
Well I for one am happy you picked those little scraps out from the waste basket.....look at the beautiful blocks you made! Love them!
beautiful. can't wait to see it embellished
Looks like the start of something really colorful and pretty. So glad the storm wasn't too bad for you and your family.
Very good idea. I have been working with scraps. I have way too much large pieces of fabrics, but the scraps are becoming my favorites.
Look what you did with all the great "fabric" that you almost discarded.
Glad you made it through Matthew with little trouble. Your fabrics are wonderful and it looks like a fun project.
so what day is trash day in your area? I usually trash pick after midnight. LOL. No, really, I love your new "fabric". Are the dryer sheets easy to rip away? do they gum up your needle? I never tried them.
Love your new fabric! They are fun and addictive to make. Can't make just one!
Will super textural after washed..all those frayed edges......
What a great idea! I have alwys thought dryer sheets would make a great inexpensive stabilizer. This is so colorful.

Had to chuckle. I have some of that kitty fabric. And I'm a dog person!
:) |
Waste not, want not philosophy has produced lovely blocks. Good for you.
Wow! I've got a box of pressed dryer sheets and I have a box of small pieces as well. I have planned to do the same thing. Won't the material ravel ? I have to say yours look great.
Looks like fun and I love the cats peeking out from your scraps.
Love this idea Rosy especially love the block with the kitty in it.
What fun - just like making your own fabric design

I am going to blanket stitch all the seams, so it wont fray and on top of that I will quilt it also. Now here is a work up of how I do it. Someone as me how,
First, I sew two dryer sheets together for a larger block. then I just lay any two pieces down, laying one piece 1/4 over the other piece. I sew that seam 1/4 away edge. then I add another piece, same way etc etc. I will get better at this. I would lay an oval down and cut it to conform to the piece under it or I would just shove the next piece under what is there already and sew. As I do it I get better lol. Here are a few pics of the steps. 1 and 2 and 3...the finished block and then the cut finished block. Here is another block I finished yesterday with a big kitty. I also have only dogs but love the kitties in quilts. Start at the bottom, for some reason it put the first pic last. the pics are all out of order but I think you can tell where I started and ended. |
Kool. I am doing something like that I an using "used color catchers" as a foundation. Doesn't look as pretty as yours. OH well. BrendaK
Brenda, when in doubt. put a cat in it lol
Oh love this, Rosy....I too use dryer sheets, but I cut them down into smaller pieces to use for my mini blocks....oh so funny to pull stuff from the garbage....
