I provide speech services to 3 classrooms with intensive needs kids. January and February we are studying animals. Ocean animals this week. I made a quilt game, "Toss the Starfish." After the students describe their starfish, they get to toss it on the quilt, earning points. Here is the quilt, the center, a starfish's favorite food, worth the most points. Needless to say, the kids love it!

I love your photo of the eclipse. Sadly, it was cloudy where I live. I was all prepared for a photo session, but alas, no photo ops here.

And this is why the speech and language teacher is always one of the favorite teachers on any staff. Your quilt/game is great! Beautiful and fun too! What a winning combination!

Thanks, Ladies!

I'm working on a Vehicle unit quilt right now. The Assistive Tech department got a grant and got me to help put the unit together. I didn't do any of the switch tech stuff, but I put together 2 binders of lessons, and now I'm designing a quilt for the kids to drive the cars on. I hope it turns out 1/2 as well as the ocean quilt.

I love it! Is this a pattern? Where can we get it?

MissTreated 02-22-2008 07:53 PM

Sorry, not a pattern. Pattern from the depths of my mind. I came up with the idea for the clam and found the background fabric, and the rest of it just fell into place.

What a great game. Bet the kids don't mind coming to speech when they get to play a terrific game. You did a wonderful job on the quilt.

That is fabulous! The game idea, the points, the COLORS, the feeling of the starfish--everything a student needs to be motivated to do whatever you need he/she to do.

I'm so impressed.

You are terrific. :D

MissTreated 02-23-2008 07:37 AM

Thanks, all! The kids had fun with it, but with intensive needs kids, well, they are pretty unpredictable. They were actually more into the little plastic token we gave them to keep their score than they were in the quilt! :D Never a dull moment in there!

What a great idea and what a special person you are for coming up with it!

I just love Speech Therapists like you. I teach Speech and Language Delayed preschoolers and my kids would adore your "game". We have to be very tricky to keep coming up with ways to get those little kids to listen and follow directions and the "game" concept is always a winner! (especially when is as appealing as yours!!!!)

Love it--Didn't have teachers like you when I went to school!!Your children are very fortunate to have such an inspired teacher who cares to make their learning fun even if they liked the tokens best at that moment.

That is one of the coolest teaching tools I've ever seen!! Yep, this proves it, quilters make the best teachers!!! (Amongst other "bests") Lucky kids you're helping my friend!! Wish there were more teachers like the wonderful ones I've met on this board!! What great shape our school systems would be in then!!! Ahhh to dream!! Thanks for sharing...the girls said that you deserve a big ole "A+" for that one!!

SEVENCUBS 02-29-2008 01:47 PM
