I found this on net while surfing some photos of Americana. I got this description from the site......

August 17, 1937. "Joseph's coat of many colors had nothing on this unique quilt which is now being completed by Mrs. Ethel Sampson of Evanston, Ill., after six years of collecting. Parts of wearing apparel from President Roosevelt, Mrs. Roosevelt, members of the Cabinet, diplomats and notables from all over. From Hollywood, Bing Crosby sent a tie while Mae West and Shirley Temple contributed parts of dresses. Former Emperor Haile Selassie's neckties and a linen of Windsor are also included on the quilt. Diapers from the Dionne Quintuplets are also prominently displayed."

What an accomplishment! I wonder what happened to it?

The pieces that were used from the famous people were embroidered with the name of who donated it. If you look close enough you can see neckties from Hoover, Roosevelt, the Mae West dress piece is beside the ladies head with the leaf on it.

Amelia Earhart has 2 "blocks" on the quilt the first one is next to Mae West's (it looks like a bird and is the wings) and the other "block" is under the couple with the gentleman sitting.

What a unique piece of history

Looking at the picture again, I am struck by the way "ordinary everyday America" is captured in the details of the room, faces and clothes of those in the picture.

That is an awesome quilt, so much history stitched into it!!! Thank you for sharing this with us. I was amazed at the detail when you look at the full sized image :D:D:D

The Ethel Sampson Historical Crazy Quilt is in the collection of the Evanston History Center in Evanston, Illinois. Ethel Sampson spent most of her time making this quilt in Evanston and it was donated to the institution in the 1960s by her family after she died. The quilt is a really fantastic piece of work, that captures the history of celebrities and the culture of her time. The quilt will be going on display for the first time on May 6, 2011.
