i am doing a heritage medallion quilt and i am having color issues,,, anybody want to give me some advice.....please..............there is still more of the cut ones to do and to add to go around the medallion,, i just stopped because its bugging me
just doesn't make my eyes happy this is the total quilt,,sorry there is more to be done.. i just didnt want to move on until i figured out the colors a bit more |
Well, just my opinion, but I think if you take the four corner sections and put them in where you have the other four sections once....try that once?? (Put them on the four sides of the center square)
|
I think your colors are beautiful. The only thing that might be bugging you is the middle is so white compared to the more cream and brown colors that you used in your other blocks. Since you can't change that, I might just use that same white to border around the whole thing. Just a very small border, no more than an inch or so. Otherwise, I think your quilt is wonderful.
|
It will be a beautiful quilt,I do agree with tricia though, I think you won't be happy with the white medallion, maybe add a tea dye instead of doing it over. Donna

i think the tea dye is a great idea,,, might do a sq and see what the difference is.. thanks,,,

You realize you will get a different opinion from each of us that post a response!
I am finding the side bright blocks jarring. My first thought would be to continue the browns in those slots with much smaller pieces of the red and green. BUT, I continued to consider if those same colors are taken to the next round that would integrate them into the total design a bit more. SO, perhaps, you just need to continue and add more of those colors to make them seem like they do belong in this quilt. I agree that the center is a bit white, hows about tea dying it to tone it down a tad? Go ahead and put your blocks together, if you don't use them in this quilt I'm sure they'll fit into another. Have fun while you're playing and remember there is no right or wrong answer here. Do what pleases you! |
i have more cut, i am going to put up my felt board and place and see what happens
then i will take another camera shot of it and see what my eyes see ... thanks everyone for your help,,, thats why i love this board.... |
Well, I for one am anxious to see what you do with it! It will be a beauty I am sure once you get to that AHA moment with it!
|
Personally? I think the green blocks (the lighter ones) are throwing the entire quilt off... I'd try them in brown and off white or beige.
|
thats what it is for me too,,, looks xmasy instead of homey...i will play with that color as well..... thank you

see now you ladies are being honest....lol !! thanks for not letting me get too far with a horrid look.. I knew my eyes didn't like it for a reason.. just don't have the training to pick right up on it.... thanks so much
starting over OK NEW VERSION,, AM I GETTING THERE YET? |
regarding the second version: unless you are trying for a xmas look, I think you should use brown & red tones instead of the greens.
|
Here's my two cents. The yellow vine print and the red and green triangles just don't fit with the traditional applique center and the tan and brown blocks. It is like you have two very different quilts mixed up.
I think if you try some reproduction fabrics that are in cream, dark red and dark greens it might work better. The tan and brown blocks are very eye catching, as is the center. It looks very traditional that way, and the brighter colors disagree with it. That is my opinion anyway! |
you are so very right.... back to the drawing board.... i will use the green and reddish blocks for something like, hmmmmmmm,,
a xmas table runner perhaps !!!!! i will hit on something with the help you are giving me... this is what i get for trying to teach myself,, but i learn fast. off with the greens... begone i say !!!! |
Center looking better with the tea dye. But I do agree with everyone else-the browns and the center look very traditional and the reds and greens are just too bright. I say begone with those too!!!!

new look is here !!!
sheesh,,what would i do without you all !!! back to the beginning |
I felt really uncomfortable with making the comment about the light green, but sometimes on here, I think we tend to be too much "WOW" and not enough "WHOA!" So I really appreciate all you quilters who will make a stand... I really think it is for the best! Constructive comments are easier to take than spending weeks on a project and standing back and wanting to cry at the results!
That's my Rick Mercer Rant for today ( you Canadians might know who I mean... the Newfoundlanders certainly do!) Lori |
i was a lunch lady supervisor for 16 years. i can handle critisim in any form...i don't want you to say it's grand when you are throwing up in the bucket next to your computer!!! lol
i will keep moving forward,,,, make a note ladies that colleen53 loves brutal honesty..... can't learn without it !! |
Thats what I was talking about Colleen....putting those next to the center....that looks so much better to my eye! Now, what to do with the corners huh? LOL

I'm brand new here, and havent quilted a lot, so please, hope im not stepping in wrong, but just thought i would try this idea for you. I think your newest version looks better colourwise. But having the stars re-arranged like that, takes away from the beauty of your centre applique. It kinda makes it look like a cream coloured square just kinda plunked in the middle? Instead of drawing beautiful attention to your applique? So this is what i was thinking. Why not accentuate the centre, by extending the cream colour into a beautiful diamond that catches the eye, maybe add more applique in the new cream pieces or not, use the chocolate brown to make a half inch diamond border, put the stars in the corners. Use the chocolate brown on all things you want to stand out, like stars and things, use your flowered brown background for all the backgrounds, then on very outside of all this, put another chocolate brown border, then you could add a burgandy one if you want, and another chocolate brown
|
colleen, I just love the total quilt that you showed on the 1st post. The new look is definetely much better. I still like the block patterns that the old red and green blocks were....just not the colors. Do you have anything stashed that will work with the remaining blocks that you can go back to the original block designs? I think that as you build the quilt, it will be beautiful!
|
wow you really put a lot of thought into that for me,,, i have been twisting and turning and making changes all day,,, then i sit and look at it,,and go twist and turn some more
i am going to make up some smaller blocks and then play some more,,, thank you so much for your great ideas,, and i will see how i can implement that into my quilt. thank you so much for taking the time :D |
