Here is my interpretation of Ricky Tims Convergence quilts. I started this quilt two summers ago. It's good to have it finished. It measures 36" square. If you've not tried the convergence quilts they are a lot of fun to make. I've made three and each one is totally different from the others. It's interesting to see what you get after the slicing and dicing and the stitching. This is 'Lemonade'.

OH!!! It looks FUN! That's great! I'm a bit at a loss for words right now, but I love the contrast. I like things with a big contrast in colors, esp. quilts!
How are the zig zags made? Is it cut and assembled or rick rack or?????????

Yvonne 03-23-2007 09:23 PM

Miranda,
The zig-zags are a wide black rick-rack.

ZXY, I just bought his book after I'd seen one of these quilts. It 'called' my name! I understand Mr. Tims puts on quite a show!

It's GORGEOUS Yvonne! Did you take a class with Ricky Tims? I was lucky enuf to attend one of his lectures & he was so much fun! I also bought one of his music CDs too. An all-around creative guy, that's for sure.

WAIT! WAIT! WAIT! I'm new to quilting, and I don't know the name Ricky Tims, BUT...Music was my first love...(Um...well, I may be stretching that one just a bit. I honestly can't tell you if it was music or Volkswagens). What kind of music is this?

ah...that's good...I was hoping you would say that! It was all so uniform and neat!!!! That's that much less I have to learn! ;)
Actually I just bought my first rick rack to sew onto my daughter's spring dress I'm making! :)
Maybe it isn't easy to work with?! Never tried it, yet.....
Just a single stitch straight through the center, aye?

zyxquilts 03-23-2007 09:35 PM

Ricky, besides being an amazing quilter, is also a composer & he played the piano during the lecture I attended. If you go to his website www.rickytims.com , and click on the "music pages", you can hear some clips.

Yvonne, I had noticed your pic yesterday in your avator space and wanted to comment on it. It is just beautiful. Of course, I love using yellow in my quilts. It just makes everything pop.
I'm going to check this pattern out. I think its wonderful!!

Can you buy just the pattern or do you have to buy the book? Is he the only one who makes these? They are very interesting. I have seen some done in green with graduations to blue. They were sleepy looking where the yellow is sunshine.
you did a nice job

I checked 14.28 fo the book or 12 for pattern

Wow !!! How stunning is that..... I absolutely love it... Well done... How would I get the pattern please? Does he have a book with other smart designs in it?

Boo 03-25-2007 01:05 AM

Yvonne, it is stunning and really fun looking. Your choice of colors and fabric is so out of the norm for me, that I found myself looking longingly at your quilt. I am currently on a 19th century kick and although I love all the fabric that comes into the shop, I still spend mostly on the repros. Your quilt has inspired me to look around again. Thank you.

Ricky Tims came to our guild and was very entertaining. Pam, the shop owner, did take his class and started one of the convergance quilts. But as a shop owner, her sewing time is limited. I think she has more UFO's than anyone. I think I will ask her to get that out, and I may try my hand at finishing it for her.

Very nice quilt Yvonne! I love the colors, you do very nice work.

B_RGuest 08-14-2007 03:06 PM

Hi Yvonne,
Your convergence quilt is as beautifu as the cardinal quilt. You are a very good quilter. I have one question, though, what is a convergence quilt?

Yvonne 08-14-2007 03:13 PM

Thank you for the kind words. I'm just having fun here! :o)
Ricky Tims has a book out on making convergence quilts.
Basically it's just cutting the strips of fabric, moving them around and sewing them together. Then you turn the whole thing and cut in the oposite direction, move the strips about again and sew those back together.
You're converging two pieces of fabric into one. It's a very simple process and you can make the quilt top in an hour or so.

Rebecca Chambley 08-14-2007 03:24 PM

very NICE.

Cathe 08-14-2007 06:01 PM

WOW - that is really neat!! I like your fabrics - I have only seen it done in batiks and similar fabrics before, and I like yours better.

Gloria Purnell 08-31-2007 06:01 AM

Does convergence mean the contrast in colors? Very pretty quilt.

Yvonne 08-31-2007 08:46 AM

Gloria,
Converge means to "come together from different directions so as eventually to meet." I've used 4 different fabrics on this quilt and "made them come together." I made one convergence quilt where the fabrics were very similar so you don't have to have contrast at all. It's all up to you the designer.

You can learn more about convergence quilts from Ricky Tims at

Have fun!

What a surprise to see this old quilt pop up again! Glad you all are still enjoying it.
Amma, I've made three convergence quilts but the other two are older and are posted on my web site.

One's a "black cat convergence" and the other is called a "butterfly convergence." I think it's about time to make another one! Thanks for asking.

MissTreated 05-28-2008 09:13 PM

Beautful job! Love the colors! I made one awhile back. They're a fun quilt to do! I haven't done the actual quilting yet, I have a specific design I want to do and I haven't been very motivated. :)

I love it! I've never seen one like this before.

cleodaisy 09-21-2012 10:07 AM

Your quilt is just beautiful. It is lots of fun to make these. One of mine was bright pinks and reds. My DH looked at it and said "Boy, that is bright!"
