Haven't tried to finish the top open edges because I don't know how! But I have a neat olive green color bias binding that I think would look nice.

sewjoyce 06-09-2009 05:26 PM

Very pretty!! And yes, green across the top would look super!

Do you have bias tape or do you have actual fabric that you need to cut?

Jim's Gem 06-09-2009 05:32 PM

Pretty! Nice project for your first quilting experience!!

kluedesigns 06-09-2009 05:32 PM

it looks really good.

*QuilterWannabee* 06-09-2009 05:44 PM

Thanks for commenting! I will be happy when it's finished off! : )

*QuilterWannabee* 06-09-2009 05:47 PM

Thanks for the green vote. Bias tape, I guess...? It came in a package. I bought three $5 garbage bags full of notions and things from an older lady downsizing her home, it was in there, prepackaged.

*QuilterWannabee* 06-09-2009 05:52 PM

Thanks for commenting! Nice to hear the feedback. Great dress btw! : )

Debbie1 06-09-2009 05:54 PM

I love your bag - please share when you get it finished!

*QuilterWannabee* 06-09-2009 05:59 PM

Thanks Debbie--will do!

Kyiav10 06-09-2009 06:02 PM

I like it!!

sewjoyce 06-09-2009 06:09 PM

OK, this is what I would do with the bias tape:

Take one end of the unfolded bias tape and pin at the top of the pouch by one of the end seams. (Fold tape over a bit at the beginning) Pin all around and then sew on. (Overlap the tape when you get back to the beginning by about 1/2".) Then refold the bias tape and either hand stitch to the inside or machine stitch. And presto -- pouch done! Clear as mud?

amma 06-09-2009 06:17 PM

Very pretty!!! I love the fabrics :D :D :D

littlehud 06-09-2009 06:29 PM

That is so cute. And what a great job you did. The green on the top would look great.

*QuilterWannabee* 06-09-2009 07:12 PM

Clear as mud? That made me laugh, for real! Thanks.
You know that was sort of the picture I had in my head, ... you confirmed it and explained it a little better. I think because I have no confidence I hesitate for fear of "messing it up." I think I need someone to hold my hand, or somebody's Grandma to patiently teach me...lol...I need to stop that, huh? The people on here are inspiring...thank you for taking the time to explain this.

*QuilterWannabee* 06-09-2009 07:39 PM

Thank you! : )

*QuilterWannabee* 06-09-2009 07:40 PM

Yard sale, 25 cents, could not beat that! Thanks.

*QuilterWannabee* 06-09-2009 07:42 PM

Thanks! I was happy for a first attempt at something. : )

sewjoyce 06-10-2009 05:16 AM

Don't worry about "messing it up" -- we all have done our fair share of "unsewing".......

Angie 06-10-2009 06:01 AM

Lovely! I think green would be perfect!

Bevanger 06-10-2009 06:28 AM

Very pretty. I agree on the green as well

amandasgramma 06-10-2009 06:33 AM

love it -- would love to see it in final stage.

Carol W 06-10-2009 10:25 AM

Very cute.

*QuilterWannabee* 06-10-2009 11:55 AM

Thanks, that really does make me feel better. : )

*QuilterWannabee* 06-10-2009 11:57 AM

Thanks for the vote!

*QuilterWannabee* 06-10-2009 11:58 AM

I will share once I am done! Will appreciate the feedback!

Mousie 06-10-2009 12:11 PM

that's cute...right up, my alley! :D

*QuilterWannabee* 06-10-2009 12:22 PM

Oh, this is great...really...what I thought was my "flunkie" attempt turns into something people actually like. My companion told me that little thing was to quilting like if I said I played the tuba and blew one note! Isn't that horrible? lol. I could smack him. Glad I have you ladies.

Hey, smack away -- And you might try a hammer on top of his head first just to get his attention

MadQuilter 06-10-2009 02:18 PM

Could you add a zipper? It's real cute.

*QuilterWannabee* 06-10-2009 03:13 PM

A zipper would probably be nice. I've never tried to do a zipper! Maybe I will try that, if I can figure it out. Should I practice on something first?

kwhite 06-10-2009 04:52 PM

I have tons of zippers if you need a few. I can send you some. And as for the partner, if they are smart they learn quickly to keep their mouth shut unless it is a good thing.

Then refold the bias tape and either hand stitch to the inside or machine stitch
I would put the bias tape on the inside and sew it down. Then fold to the outside. It would be much easier to hand stitch that way. Here's a bag I made doing it this way. It's actually called "psychodelic tote" but the abbreviation came out "psycho tote". Kind of fits me though

Quilt4u 06-11-2009 02:57 AM

I like it. Great job.

RedGarnet222 06-11-2009 06:22 AM

Hey this is cute! You did a great job on it. If you want it to close you could always add some velcro with tiny stitches, hand stitched on after you finish the bias edges off. That would be pretty easy.

Just in case you want to make one with a zipper next time, take the two front and back pieces of fabric and sew the zipper on. right sides together. Then sew up the sides, leaving the zipper open while you sew it. Then turn it right side out .... done! (The edges could have bias sewn on to finish the inside pretty, but if they are pinked, it shouldn't ravel very much.)

BellaBoo 06-11-2009 07:26 PM

I am going to try this after finding an old clutch bag with an actual old measuring tape used for the closure. It still worked great too.

Cut a metal measuring tape (The wide yellow Stanley tape is good) to fit around the purse and sew it in like elastic. That will make a snap shut opening. Easier then sewing in a zipper. I don't like sewing zippers.

I better explain more. Don't sew through the metal but encase it like a waistband.

*QuilterWannabee* 06-11-2009 11:08 PM

I like that bag! You're too funny!..."Kind of fits me, though." : ) Like your idea too. Thanks.

*QuilterWannabee* 06-11-2009 11:11 PM

Thank you! I was thinking velcro might be my speed. Lots of options I would never have thought of. You make the zipper thing sound so easy can't wait to experiment with one.

*QuilterWannabee* 06-11-2009 11:12 PM

Hahahha glad you explained more! I would have tried to sew the tape.

canuckninepatch 06-12-2009 01:30 PM

Lovely job! And you're getting some great tips from others. I concur.

*QuilterWannabee* 06-12-2009 01:59 PM

Thank you : ) Yes--keep those tips coming please!
