Day of the Dead quilts

I started making these last fall and finally I'm finishing them up. I do all the embroidery and bead and button sewing in the car or while watching my teammates play tennis. I've got a dancing skeleton almost completed and thinking about a three musicians quilt. Hope you enjoy them.

i really can't understand the fascination of these type quilts. but you did a great job!!
|
Great job, you did nice work.

Native texan -- don't you think that was just the tiniest bit rude? You could have left your commentary at "you did a great job" and said the remainder to yourself in your own head. I hope you don't find me out of line, but as I approach my 9th decade on the planet, I do seem to feel I have some higher calling to remind people of their best manners. Cheers.

Those are fantastic! You did a great job on them.
|
Definitely enjoyed them -- love that first one & what you did with the flowers above their heads...Wow, don't know how you can sew in the car!! but they are great! can't wait to see the 3 musicians!

Great for the Day of the Dead
|
Beautiful colors and great work on them.

Framing those sugar skulls with rick rack was the perfect little detail for these! And the 3D flower garland and bouquet on the bride skeleton is awesome. I love all the bright colors and fanciful motifs in DOD quilts and artwork.

NativeTexan, I'm glad you enjoyed the quilts even though it isn't your thing. I'm not sure if it was the Day of the Dead theme or the raw edge applique that isn't your thing.
In San Diego a lot people celebrate Day of the Dead since we are so close to Mexico. Our town has a large Day of the Dead festival. After my sister and Dad died, that's when I decided to make these quilts. It is my way of honoring them. Here is a great animation that talks about Day of the Dead. Good for kids and adults https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCQnUuq-TEE You have to watch 3 seconds of an ad before you can skip to the animation. While I love to look at them, I've never been that interested in making traditional quilts. Most of my quilts are of my own design and usually pretty different. I think I needed a creative outlet and following patterns just doesn't give it to me, while I know it does for others. I love the design part the most. My husband did the wedding drawing for the DOD quilt, so it was nice we could work together on it. I hope when my kids inherit that quilt they will think of their dad and I. While I have made original quilts for all my kids beds, most of the quilts I make are more for wall hangings. and these quilts were fun to make and make people smile although they were a lot more work then I expected. I hope that helps you understand why people are interested in these types of quilts. |
I love your DOD expression in quilt format! I think many people who are not familiar with the DOD festivities think of it in morbid terms of death and skeletons, rather than the honoring of those that have passed. I think your representations are so special and unique. I was lucky enough to be in Peru during a DOD festival, and it was remarkable! Thanks for sharing!

I also enjoy Day of the Dead. Several members of my guild have a yearly challenge, for DOD. This will be our fourth year and we really look forward to our yearly celebration, where we unveil our projects. We hang our quilts outdoors and invite family and friends. We put up an altar and put pictures of our loved ones, last year, we added my sister, next to Mom and Dad. It is wonderful to remember and honor our dearly departed. I am already working on this years project and it is so fun to make an art quilt. Here is a picture of my quilt from 2013.

Gorgeous quilts Luci177 I especially like the big flowers on the quilt.

Awesome! I can see you now, with your grand daughter, in the parade in New Orleans, strutting your stuff with these quilts mounted as a "sign on a stick". Throwing beads to the on-lookers, Winning the parade prize of course. Such originality! Keep up the good work!

I love your DOD quilt creations and I think that your creativity is awesome. Thanks for sharing, I've never seen quilts with this theme before.

I love art quilts and these are fantastic! So colorful and a great celebration. Can't wait to see more.

I know there have been times when I wanted to say something less than kind and I have to think twice. Usually when I see something that isn't to my taste, whether it be color, design or quality of workmanship, I look for something nice to say. That being said, I can tell that you have put a lot of work into these pieces. I think they have turned out great for you and you should be proud of the outcome.
|
Pretty cool stuff!! Love how the personality shines through!
|
You did s great job on "El Dia de los Muertos."
|
The design work, colors, and hours put into those do make them very impressive....and I think the celebration is geographical and cultural. I may be wrong...
|
You did a great job on these images!
|
Really cool quilts. I love the Day of the Dead theme. Kudos!

These quilts are OUTSTANDING! Although I lived in New Mexico for 8 years, I never paid much attention to Day of the Dead. In recent years, since we retired, we RVed to Taos and were there for this celebration, and I understood so much more clearly about the holiday. I think it's a wonderful tradition to set aside a day to honor all the passed loved ones. Thanks for sharing the link too - it is very informative for those not familiar.
