This was not the easiest quilt. The needle kept popping out, and I machine quilted it and had to redo the strips! But it's done and on it's way to the little boy it was made for!

The little Eagle wall hanging went with it. That one I hand quilted around the Eagle, and machine quilted a bit on the eagle.

My DH collects eagles.....this is one he would really like. The denim and red are a perfect pair:)

That's really a great use for denim. Never thought about pairing it with bandana fabric before.

Great quilt
:)

I really like what you did. Where is the eagle fabric from?

BTW, I have made 2 bandana and blue jeans quilts, both with raw edge applique of the denim, 'picked' back to make a 1/2" fringe. Denim quilts are very popular around here.

Everyone comes up wit some wonderful quilting ideas. Love both of them. Do you mind if I copy your eagle wall hanging. Just love eagles. Don't know if I am brave enough to use denim. Made a denim quilt and dog paws bag for my daughter and had the same problem with the needle.

Please feel free to copy the eagle , it was made with 5 1/2 finished HST and a plain red in the middle.

LOVE your denim work too!

A great interpretation of denim and farmer's handkerchieves!
I'm not sure what you mean by the needle popping out. Were you using an denim (sharp) needle size 100 or 110? The bigger, sharp needle punches right through the durable denim.

QM 05-06-2011 03:34 PM

I was not sure about that either. It does take a heavy weight of machine and big needles to work with multitple layers of denim.

totally awesome!!

I love your denim quilt! The red really works with it! Great job on both your quilt and the eagle!

Thank you!
Actually I was using a singer denim needle on a bernina. I had to go real slow or the needle would pull out and stay in the fabric. Until I slowed down. No Bernina dealer here, but I think I better stock up on other types of needles either on line or next time I go to a Bernina place.

Ooh magpie be very careful using Singer needles in a Bernina. When I got mine my dealer warned me specifically about Singer needles. Something about their shape or maybe it was their length and how the hook on the bobbin race interacts with them. She said Singer's were the only ones, but would end up damaging the hook on the bobbin race. I think it takes a while though, so you should be ok, but yes stock up on those Schmitz needles! You can get them on line and if you have a JoAnn's nearby they carry them too.

BTW your quilt and eagle wall hanging are very nice. I think you will have a very happy boy getting those.
