Anyone ever hear of a Menger Sponge? It's a mathematical "cube" created by some mathematical genius or something. Anyway, my daughter (the computer geek) asked me to make a quilt designed after a menger sponge. It will look 3-D when I'm finished. Here's my design so far!

very interesting. Keep us posted on your progress....

Cool design but I am clueless about a Menger Sponge (amazing what you can learn on this board!).

I had never heard of it either.

debcavan 05-12-2011 07:01 PM

Is that totally cool. Great job

Deb watkins 05-12-2011 07:04 PM

great design, but ....oh.....all those little itty bitty squares....It wil be truly a work of art when you are done!

olebat 05-12-2011 07:04 PM

Looks pretty crafty. I like it, and I don't like math. (Oh, pretend I don't know that it has anything to do with math . . . it's a great quilt design.)

IrelandDragonQuilting 05-12-2011 07:06 PM

OH my it looks like a lot of work! But going to be very cool when you get it finished, cannot wait to see it as you progress, please keep posting as you go along :)

Either you love your daughter an awful lot (and spoil her to boot) or you're insane. Either way, I can't wait to see the finished quilt. My math teaching sister had better not see it though....I'm not insane enough (yet) and while I love her, my answer would still be NOPE, uhn-un, and get real girl!

luckylindy333 05-12-2011 07:17 PM

Wow, I can already see the 3/D-ness, very cool quilt design!

Pamela Artman 05-12-2011 07:19 PM

Yeah, I've started cutting and I have 512 black squares that are 1.5". The quilt will be 87" x 87" and maybe I'll put a black border on it. Do a google for Menger sponge. You'll see tons of them! I had never heard of it either till my daughter sent me to some websites to look at them.

craftybear 05-12-2011 07:54 PM

the quilt will be awesome!

JEM65 05-12-2011 07:57 PM

WOW! This will be a work of art!

Linda B 05-12-2011 08:01 PM

Wow!!! That is amazing. Looks like a bunch of small pieces!

BETTY62 05-12-2011 09:11 PM

I's sure it will be an awesome quilt but it's out of my league. Please post picture when it's completed.

Thusnelda 05-12-2011 09:14 PM

Wow, I'd hate to fiddle with all these tiny pieces. I'm sure it's going to look fantastic. Hope you don't mind, if I have one suggestion regarding the design. I'd add the attic window bits also to the big "hole"/square in the middle to emphasize the 3D effect.

wolfkitty 05-12-2011 09:43 PM

I don't know what the sponge is either, but I love the quilt. Wonderful of you to do it for her!

blahel 05-12-2011 10:58 PM

awesome..you must like challenges! Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Congratulations on your technique. You should be commended on your skill.

Cute. Is it made with small squares?

knlsmith 05-13-2011 02:12 AM

Very cool. I like it.

nstitchs 05-13-2011 02:27 AM

Ditto, except for the center square does not look 3 D. Is there a reason for that? This will be awesome!:)

cindy4857 05-13-2011 04:30 AM

Wow! looks complicated, but then math wasn't my strongest subject :-) It's wonderful that you can translate a mathmatical equasion or theroy (sorry bout spelling) into a quilt design.Very special thing you are doing for your daughter.

Motorcyclemad 05-13-2011 04:47 AM

You pretty much nailed it! Yes, there is someone on the board that knows some things!
I love the attic windows. If you want to really make a 3-D effect, you could add an additional side with more "windows". That may be what I work on next.
This is going to be PERFECT for your math enthusiast!

Pamela Artman 05-14-2011 08:14 AM

Oh, the center square was not designed yet! See the other post on the Menger Sponge quilt to see the center block design.
