DGD's 4-H project done

5 Attachment(s)
My 13 yr old DGD made her 4-H project this year. She is getting so busy with working on her horse in games and the other horse in pleasure, track and running, it is hard to get her to sit still long enough to get her project done. She decided that she would make pillows to go with her quilt from last year. She has taken quilts for the past 4 years. So since DH and I went to get his Model A out of his Mother's garage (estate sale will be soon) and I went to see my gravely ill mother all in Nebraska, we went on down to her place in Kansas. Our DD and DSIL helped us move the car and all my DH's model A parts for 2 other cars.
So we have been talking about what she wanted to do. We found a pattern she liked and took some of the fabric from her quilt and found a few others to help dress it up. I think you wil agree she chose well. The black batik with browns and beiges looks just great with her browns and tans. Hard to see in the photo as it is the letters and small border.
She had to quilt it this year too. I helped her but she did it. She did stippling in the outside of the horse design and did a micro stipple in the inside part of the horse on both. She top stitched on the horse close to the edge to make it stand out. The white stuff on her brown border is soap to help her follow the lines so it looks like a fence.
Thanks for looking. I hope you agree with me she did a pretty good job. The big Pillow needs more stuffing and to sew it shut but she has it done now.

Wow! Very impressive! I certainly could not have done that at 13...did make my first pair of shorts at that age but they were nothing to brag about, especially the zipper.

She did a wonderful job! It's nice to see a young one following in your foot steps.

Very impressive. It looks very creative and much more creative than what a lot of adults could do. Hopefully it will do well at the fair. She looks like she is in Senior High. I wish my diaghter (who is a Senior) would take an interest in sewing. I feel doubtful about it since when I was in Seniour High, I was sewing alot of garments already 'cause I loved sewing. I'm also curious--what kind of swing machine is she using that is in the picture? Looks like it is a Bernina but if it is a diffeeent brand, I would like to know what brand it is. I am looking for a less expensive machine to take to classes (I don't like lugging around my expensive Bernina 440QE) but all the Berninas are kind of expensive and looking for a less expensive machine. I have a Vikign also but it is also heavy to take along. Thanks for the info.

You are so right. It is a Bernina artista 180. It is my older machine that I travel with. I leave my 440 QE at home. She was in heaven to get to sew on that machine with all it's bells and whistles. I take great care of my machines as you say they are expensive. They are worth it when you go to quild meetings, as you can sew so well. I have friends who have gotten featherweights and love taking them as they sew beautifully. I guess you just have to find the right one for you to take. Thanks for the comments on my DGD, yes she is busy but she loves what she is doing.

It is a Willow Bend pattern. She has really great patterns to choose from.
