Don't you hate it when you labor over something, rip out endless seams to get it just right, only to show it to your non-quilting friends and have them say "Oh, that's nice."
Nice? NICE? Do you have ANY IDEA how long it took me to make this? You try working your fingers to the bone till all hours of the night, with the dog yapping to be let outside, only to be answered time and time again "just one more part, I promise". Stick your fingertips with pins and needles (and I'm not even a diabetic) repeatedly...I could go on and on..... NICE? These people need some lessons in admiration and adulation! At least I know the recipient of the quilt this will go into will very much appreciate it - it's for my MOM, my biggest sewing fan! |
I can just hear you saying that! I sit here laughing, I think you are totally cool! I don't Quilt yet but love quilts so very much and know the love that is put into them. I love Quilts!

You learn to let it roll off :wink: and not let it bother you... I find it hard to get excited over some of their passions too, like golf for instance :shock: :D:D:D

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that you were addressing 'non-quilters.' Can't really expect them to understand all the love, blood, sweat, and tears you (and all of us) put into our quilts. You can either try to educate them as to 'the real story' or just consider the source and move on, knowing there are many here who do understand, and come here to commiserate! Many, many good listeners here! Glad your mom appreciates your hard work, since that's who it is for! |

I hear you - but like Amma said, I am sure we get that same expression on our face, with the same tone of voice when they mention something they get excited about and we have to be polite :roll: Bowling a perfect game, hitting a hole in one, decorating a cake, etc...

What really chaps my hide is when non quilters offer their opinion of what you should have done differently. I just want to strangle them, but then again when they do this I simply add their names to the "will not receive a gift quilt from me" list.

I think quite a number of them think I am going to will them some of my quilts when I push off. They are mistaken. . |
my thoughts exactly!
I've learned over time though when you do for others, over and over, the thank you's get fewer and fewer.. I don't quilt yet, I'm working on my first one, but I have sewn numerous outfits and the last time I didn't receive any acknowedgement (sp?) .. I even paid to ship it to them.. granted it was a gift on my part ~ but at least tell the person you got it! I think we all experience this, sadly :(

On the other hand, you show your work to someone who really likes it. You can tell she likes it. She tells you how good the works is, how pretty it is, and that you should sell your work. I have no intentions of selling any of my work. It's strictly for fun. But, I say something like 'would you buy it, how much would you pay for it'?' Here is the kicker, they come back with something like "$25.00, 30.00" or something equally as stupid.

I know what that is like I spend my whole saturday out of love to make a purse for my mother in law to give for her birthday ONLY to have my sister in law have negative things to say about it She does not know how much it hurt but I worked hard on it and spend my time on it only for her to point out everyting that was wrong with it and how I could had done better or how she could had done better. If she only knew what I went through to make this purse for her mother wonder if she would had thought differently

Tell the heffer SIL that she should have made the gift since it would have been so much better..
Make for the lady whatever gift you want to give her, and then do not listen to anything from anyone. They are not in a position to judge your work.

OMGosh....I know EXACTLY how you feel!! I am doing the ornament swap and decided to do the "folded" or "quilted" ornaments that you make with the little pins...well anyway since I am BRAND NEW at all this, let's just say it wasn't as easy for me as I hoped it would be. I finished both day before yesterday and my fingers are still sore! I had bandaids on 2 fingers....I literally drew blood...I had started over I don't know how many times and my husband looks at my 1st completed ornament and says "huh...that's kind of cute"....WHAT?!!!!! Kind of cute?!!!! I have decided that I'm not listening to anyone except other quilters who actually have a clue! |

I made a 45" square wallhanging for my PEO auction one year and the bidding only went to $10. I was so insulted, I sulked all evening and probably weeks afterwards, and swore I would never make another thing. It was a gorgeous 5 stars, on point with borders in fall colors. Still ticks me off.
