Dogs & Frogs #3 is FINISHED!! ~ 1st Time FMQ ~ Don't look too close!!!

What a time I had with my 1st time FMQ'ing!! What fun too! Despite the lumps and bumps, it came out nice and straight despite what the pics show. haha. When I was 1/2 done w/FMQ'ing, I decided to hand-baste the rest of it and then the darning foot got stuck in it and caused me to abruptly stop sewing! I crossed ditches a few times and fell in once! haha! But I learned a lot! It's 59x69. Took lots of pics. Some are of the quilt hanging on the ladder. A few show my practice pieces I did for a few minutes before I started on the quilt just to get the hang of it. The little mini needed quilting so that was my 2nd practice piece. I liked doing loop de loop most of all but wherever the quilt took me is where I went!! haha. There's lots of room for improvement, but I enjoyed it!

Next I'll be putting the binding on the Postage Stamp quilt that will go with this one to the Sandy victims. It's going to a law firm and they'll distribute the quilts. If you'd like an address, just PM me and I'll let you know what it is.

Enjoy the pics!! http://my.inbox.com/img/sm/oops.gifhttp://my.inbox.com/img/sm/grin.gif

Nice job & looks great for your first FMQ. I'm still trying to work up the nerve to try FMQing, seems like patting my head and rubbing my stomach at the same time while keeping time with my toes...

Wonderful job!!!!!

Nice job! It's good that you are trying to do FMQ...a lot of people would love to but are afraid. Each time you do it, you get better. Before you know it, your curves will be smoother, stitches more consistent. I found at the beginning I did best at loops and swirls. So I perfected those before I tried to master other designs. It was at least a good year until I was able to do a decent stipple. Now I am doing feathers...thanks to Sally Terry's book Hooked on Feathers.

Save one of your early practice sandwiches. I recently came across one I did a few years ago. It was interesting to see how far I've come since then!

Thank you so much, katier, for those nice tips! Yes, loops and swirls are best to master first and hope others are inspired and will try it too!! It's a piece of cake really! I got carried away and did 3/4 of the quilt the 1st night. Need to slow down some and focus, but practice makes perfect!! C'mon everyone and give it a try!! You know who you are!! I took all the FMQ stitches out of the mini twice and left the 3rd try in as it looks nicer than the pic of the 1st try. It does take some getting used to!! Be patient and it will work out great, but you have to try first!! :o

Thanks everyone so much for your nice compliments!! They are appreciated!! :)

Congrats on the fmq. Quilting is my favorite part of doing a quilt. I love your colors and am really taken with the back.

What awesome cute quilts!!

Painiacs 04-11-2013 08:12 PM

You did a terrific job! The only thing ive done fmq on is puppy pads!! Not too good at it! Not like you!! Those will be appreciated!!

you did a terrific job. Love the quilts.

newbee 04-12-2013 06:39 AM

Great quilts! I love that you didn't do much fussy cutting on the triangles in the first quilt. I have TONS of triangles of novelty fabric and this gave me a great idea for how to use them. Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks, newbee!! Yes, I do NO fussy cutting at all ever!! It's best to let it fall naturally wherever the cut may be (IMHO)!! Looks natural then! Glad you got some ideas for this!! We look forward to seeing your post soon!!:)

quiltingeileen 04-12-2013 08:36 AM

Great job! I haven't had the nerve to try and fmq any of mine yet. Good for you. Now it will be onward and upward and it seems to me you're well on your way!

RedGarnet222 04-12-2013 10:14 AM

Oh You did GREAT for your first time. Isn't it a hoot to fmq? I love the whole process myself. Have some fun with the next one too scraplover. I really think the more you relax and have fun, the more it becomes natural to you.

Woo Hoo for your bravery!

sewbeadit 04-22-2013 02:53 PM

I think this pattern style works really great with the fabrics you have. I also love the border stripes, really looks nice. The fmq is great fun isn't it? Great job.

Thanks, sewbeadit!! FMQ sure is fun! I was so excited I had 3/4 of the quilt done the first night trying! Here's the label I forgot to show. It's a leftover block from Scrappy Greek Key; no want, no waste! :o

Very nice - you did a god job on your FMQing. I'm just learning also - did a quilt for my grandson and now that it is done I can't find the major mistakes - and he loves it.

oksewglad 04-30-2013 12:36 PM

What a fun quilt, n2! Every once in a while I have to go stalking to see what others are up to as I miss so many new threads. Now onto your next thread:) G
