I have a ??, for anyone/everyone.I've been hand quilting on a grdmothers flower garden quilt top..I started hand quilting it in Oct-2012. I'm 98% done with it. Here is my ???. What should I do with the outside each of the quilt I'm working on..I posted a picture. So I hope anyone, will understand what I'm asking..Its the white area next, to the green path. Thanks for any suggestions. Also each of those hexagon, I'm quilting a 1/4" around. There was roughly 2500-3000 hexagons. When it gets hand quilted completely. I'm be makeing another quilt to hand quilt it also. TAKE CARE everyone, and WELCOME to the newer member's. Don-isewman

I can't find the picture but, I saw one where they stitched and turned a row of hexagons that matched the edge, so that there was a single row of hexies around the edge on the back. Does that make sense?
found it!

Cross hatching???

grannie cheechee 02-09-2013 04:27 PM

I've seen the flower garden cut to make it square, Then bind it. Is that what your asking? How to finish the edges?

I'veseen old GMFG quilts simply bound around the hexagonal edges. You could put a facing on,turn it,and that would work

It seems to me you are asking what to do in the white spot before the binding. What about putting a 1/2 GFG block in that space? It would fill that space and still offer a straight edge. Just a thought...

I have seen partial units or not complete flowers in the edge areas. Some fill with more green hexes , to represent the grass walkway. Some use more white rather than green . Some Grandmothers flower garden quilts I have seen do not have a binding.. both the back and top are turned in 1/4 inch and edge stitched. I think they call that a "knife edge turned edge"... The final edge has the shape of each edge of the hex on the border minus the 1/4 inch.
By the way awesome work fussy cutting alot of those hexes.

I am hand quilting a GFG too and have been at it since 2010. Too many other things going on. I never knew about the knife edge finish but I think it will work just great and I am going to give it a try. Good luck, Don with yours. The one my mom made back in the 30's has a small 1/2 " binding aorund the entire edge.

I echo Lori S.....I have one similar to yours on the go, I have completed all the blocks and next is the mammoth task of joining them up and then the hand-quilting. Yours looks great. I was considering facing mine, but have seen many knife-edge with a small binding....that's probably how I will finish mine (sometime in the next decade:)). Let us know what you decide and please share with us the finished pic. Love your work Don.....happy quilting.
