dreden plate WIP

one of these is on my list of "to do someday"....but I probably won't attempt one this big! Beautiful job! Love the colors!

Might I ask, how long have you been working on this? Dresden plate is on my "to do someday" list also. How long do I need to set aside? Ha!

Lots of work but it well worth it. Keep up posted on your progress.

1 day to cut all the pieces total of 28 differnt frabrics. Then made 20 stack of 16 pieces so no 2 blocks are alike, half a day. Next day and a half sew all the plates together. next 2 days sew them on the blocks and putting together.

are they appliqued to the block?

I just satin stiched all the way around each block

I just purchased Eleanor Burns pattern for this quilt. I want to make one by June for my daughter. She told me I had made everyone quilts (friends, grand kids & other family members) but not her. I just finished a top for Turning 20 for her & want to do this one as a special. Hope it turns out as good a yours!

Beautiful quilt .. You did a very good job.. I want to ask if you used a temple..such as the freezer paper....or how did you keep the shape so perfect. And after the prints are together you applicaided the plate to the square??? :oops: hey this is so I can learn, I would love to make a quilt top like this one.. Right now I am working on a double wedding ring quilt.. and would love to make it also.

I made a plastic templet and rotery cut them from 2 1/2 strips. I stacked 3 42" stips folded in half and started cutting.

They're 16 petals to each plate. I found 28 differnt fabric strips or partial strips in my stash. This way no 2 plates are alike. I sewed each plate together then centered them in the block and satin stich all the way around I used a glass to make the center circle.

I want to do a wedding ring but not brave enough yet just sticking to the simple quilts first

Did you satin stitch around each petal or the entire plate? Barb

Your quilt is very beautiful. I did one for my very first project when I was learning how to quilt.
A tip for anyone interested in appliqueing the "plates" to a background. Sew a running stictch at the edge of each plate knotting the thread at the begiining and leaving long tails at the end. Simply pull the thread a little bit like making a yoyo. The edge of the "plate will gather up a little and the raw edge will turn under slightly. Press it and then you can slip stitch it to your background. I did this on pattern called "Dancing Fans" at Christmas and it worked like a charm. Hope this helps anyone who is intimidated by this pattern. Its not that hard a pattern to do and looks great when completed. Mine had 12 blocks and wide sashing and borders and was big enough for a queen size bed.

I really love it I haven't tackled anything like it yet. You make it sound easy. I want to make a dresden fan. Actually it is a half plate. I don't think I am up to it yet . Maybe at the end of year two. Have you made a sun bonnet sue? which would be easier? Maybe I could make a pillow top to test it out......again good work

Haven't done a Sun Bonnet Sue it looked more difficult. Actually the hardest part of this quilt was cutting the petals.

did you turn any under or just satin stich on the edge?

I hate having to turn anything under ( I'M LAZY) just satin stiched on the machine

sounds good to me.I'm not patient if things get to fussy......you can't tell at all........what's a satin stitch for if not to make use of it......looks great :D

I agree that a wedding ring quilt looks very hard with all the curves but very pretty. A dear elderly friend of mine quilts wedding ring quilts, but all by hand.

Ruth, I ahve done all 3 and my favorite is Sun Bonnet Sue. So much opportunity for your own personality to shine through on her. You can add embellishments like rick rack and show her holding ballons with rick rack for string, or rick rack at the bottom of her dress to represent her petticoat or embroidery on the hat band or apron. All kinds of neat possibilities with ole susie q

its been almost 3 years and I finaly finished the scallop border. Far to many interuption and others that need to get done Someday I'll actualy finish it.
