dry needle-felting

1 Attachment(s)
Have been experimenting with dry needle-felting. Wanted a nice finish, like a quilt...so used a panel of batting and a pure cotton back, bound in black quilter's cotton. All 100% wool on the front. This is for our newest grandson Logan Cosimo. To keep him warm in winter (it's just turned autumn here now).

Now this is done I can work on my grandaughter's quilt, maybe another needle-felted blanket and the dreaded string-quilt for my DIL (dreaded because it just gets kept on the back-burner with these babies arriving), oh and burp cloths...useful, easy to make but boy, cotton chenille makes a mess and it's getting hard to find here.

Very pretty. Dry felting is done without water, there is also wet felting

I think dry felting is also called needle punched??

Thank you for all your kind comments. Dry felting is getting wool roving/tops (unspun clean fluffy wool from sheep/alpaca) and then pushing or 'needling' it into a woollen blanket to form a design. The needles are very thin and barbed, so as you stab at the wool, it pushes and felts it together permanently. I drew the design on to the woollen blanket piece and then needle felted it. Before sandwiching and binding I washed the top, so any marks came out and it helps to flatten and further mesh everything together (I did my usual fret about worrying if it would fall to bits). You do have to watch your fingers and you need a sturdy brush (looks like a rectangular scrubbing brush) under the project to protect your lap/surfaces, but very easy to do.

Very pretty & unique technique. I really like this & you took a beautiful photo of it in the garden.
If you ever get tired of using cotton chenille for your burp cloths, you can make them from flannel. I
make a lot for new babies using this tutorial. I can find cloth diapers at Walmart. I prewash the diapers
and the flannel so they don't shrink up much when mommy washes them. They make up really fast.

Thank you....Osewme. I make some with chenille and some with a towelling back (kind of 'good going out' ones and 'stay at home ones').
