Extra step when making bowl cozies
3 Attachment(s)
Before I put the darts in I draw a circle with a dish on the bottom, in the center. Then I sew around from outer circle to the middle. This gives the bottom some definition.

nicely done, thanks for the tip
|
oh that would work well. great thinking.
|
Cute cozy!
|
What a great idea for definition to the bottom. I've made lots of these for gifts & for myself. I absolutely love them & we use them every single day of the year.
|
Great tip thanks
|
Great idea, thanks.
|
What an excellent idea! I hate when mine are all floppy and have no defined bottom. :)
|
What size square do you start with? How deep do you sew the darts and the width of the dart at the top/side of square?
Someone brought one to me and asked me to make some. It seemed different than I do them as to size. |

This is such a great tip. I made mine and after they were done, I did not like the “poofieness” (is that a word?) in the bottom. I stitched a square in that area. It was awkward because the bowl shape was already there. I may make some more now using your method . |
What are you batting with and what are the dimensions? In other words have you a pattern. They look simple enough and will make great holiday gifts.
|
Great idea and thanks for sharing with us.
|
Thank you. Just getting ready to make some for Christmas presents.

That's a great idea. Thank you for sharing!

I also make mine with a 10" sq. I also make a few from 12-13" starting sq. this size is good for medium serving bowls. Since it is my husband and I most of time. When it's a family get together I use regular heat pads.I use my smaller ones for veggies and such that are in a cereal size bowl.

Thanks for the tip of quilting definition in the bottom. I think I want to make some of these for holiday gifts.
|
Great idea.
|
Beautifully done and thank you for the tip

Good thinking.. and thanks for sharing as I'm making some for Christmas.
|
I do that too
|
I like the stitching on the bottom.
Could one use cotton terry towels for the batting/filllng? |
This is a great idea! I will give it a try!
|
Very nice and what a great tip. This would give the bowl good stability
|

Thick layers

I’m having such trouble sewing through two layers of fabric and 2 layers of Wrap N Zap. I have tried different needles and a different foot but still having difficulty.
It was going well until I read the directions on the Wrap N Zap, which states to soak prior to use. Now, it is so poofy after that it causes a LOT of problem for me. But I feel if it’s recommend by the manufacturer, I SHOULD do it, right? Can anyone help me? |
Can someone please point me to a good tutorial for making these bowl cozies? Many thanks!

This is a good tutorial also. |
These bowls can also be used for so many other things that hot or cold food. How about a candy dish or maybe a cute place to hold small quilty stuff so they don’t get lost. I’m betting others can come up with more uses. These bowls are so cute and can be made for all kinds of holidays plus but cool fabrics in general. I personally can see lots of batiks. Oh, and how about using orphan small blocks and squaring them up to the outside edges before cutting the corners and darts??!!!

Hi Megan! That sounds so frustrating. I'm guessing the manufacturer did not foresee the multiple layer issue so no, I don't think you have to do what they told you to have your project turn out.
What about trimming the wrap n zap so there's only one layer in the edge where you're sewing through so many layers? Or if you don't want to backtrack, maybe you can handsew those spots? Leatherworking tools could help if it's really fighting back. Good luck! Let us know how it turns out. |
Thanks GrammieN for cozy bowl tutorial links!
