Fabric choices for cousin's son's quilt

3 Attachment(s)
My cousin's son is 14. He is usually playing some sort of video game and he loves paintball. When he saw the quilt I had made at Christmas for my brother, he asked if I could make him one. I said maybe. I found this neat fabric online. I think I'm going to do big squares to show off the fabric and the back will be the paintball fabric. I was thinking I might just put various colors around each block. What do you think?

Terrific choice of fabrics for 14 y.o.

Where did you find them?

Teddybear Lady 08-28-2012 11:20 AM

The game fabric is from http://www.grubersquiltshop.com/Fabr...PrintsMisc.htm The name on the selvedge says..."Techno Kid's" #H4004 by Hoffman California International Fabrics.

The spatter paint fabric is from www.fabric.com It's call "Graphic Collage Primary/Multi FP-329

I hope this helps.

Do you think my idea of different colors around the squares sound okay. I need to get it done so I can start on another quilt. I have until Christmas, but I wanted to get this one done for sure since Clayton asked for one.

Your idea is great, he will love it.

I just checked the site for the spatter paint and can't find it. They might be out. I got it for $3.95 a yard in the clearance section. I think it might be made by Marcus Brothers.

If I am understanding you right, you're going to take that techno kid fabric and cut it into large squares and want to add colored borders around the square and ultimately join the squares into a top. I would frame the square with 4 colors total -- one color each side.

If you are not cutting up your techno kid fabric but want to add a multi colored border along the lines of the picture you have posted, go for it. The yellow on the top doesn't look as vibrant as the other colors you have and a gray would be a good addition, too. Could just be my computer monitor, too.

Have fun! That is so sweet that you're making a quilt for your cousin's son. You must make great quilts for him to be asking for one. Those are GREAT fabric finds for him. I wish you were my cousin.

Cool fabrics!

snownannie 08-28-2012 11:53 AM

Very cool for a tennage boy!

i agree with multiple colors around the blocks... maybe with attic windows pattern since you are keeping the fabric mostly "whole" ?? really love the fabrics ...and pretty special that a 14 year old boy liked your quilt enough to ask for one of his own. with those fabrics, it will be great whatever you decide.

Oh I wished I had found this fabric. I love it.

Thanks for your suggestion. I just pulled some scraps out to see what I had. I'll have to think for a while before I start anything. You are right about the top yellow fabric. I was just laying out what I had. It's too pale for me. haha I love vibrant colors. I was also thinking of making a "scrappy" border by putting all the colors around the square. I don't know. I'll have to play with my material for a while. :D

I think there might be some of the "techno" fabric left. Check the gruber quilt shop site in my first post. I couldn't find the splatter paint one though on Fabric.com. Like I said, it was on clearance for $3.95. I'm so glad I ordered it last week.

He must really admire you to ask for a quilt of his own. So many kids that age have very little regard for their "elders." So sweet of you to make sure to make one that his all his own.

MamaBear61 08-28-2012 05:34 PM

Perfect for the young man and I like the idea of bordering each block with the solids.

kathdavis 08-28-2012 07:16 PM

Great ideas! Can't wait to see it all come together.

It would make a great quilt for a teen boy. Cutting your blocks either 10 or 12 inches & sash each with a different color would be really cool looking.

lbc 08-28-2012 09:51 PM

He will be so pleased. It's fun to make a quilt for someone who really wants one.

nunnyJo 08-29-2012 05:35 AM

great choice and backing is awesome

Jingle 08-29-2012 08:23 AM

Your fabric choices and ideas for differnent colored sashes will make a perfect quilt for him. Love the paintball fabric too. He will be so happy to get it.

I am making a quilt for my son who is 27. He wanted black and green. I found a print with multiple dollars on it with a black background. I have been having a ball with the design. I made 28 arrowheads for the border and a big medallion in the center with snail trails. I am still in the block making stage. Hopefully, I can figure out how to download a picture when it is done.
I love the paintball fabric.

Quiltmaniac2010 08-29-2012 11:34 AM

What great fabric for a teenaged boy!!! And aren't you just sweet to make this for him! Can't wait to see it finished!

LoisM 08-29-2012 11:46 AM

Great colors and fantastic prints!

wesing 08-29-2012 07:08 PM

Great fabrics for a teenage boy. You could also alternate the big blocks with 4-patches or 9-patches of random combinations of your solids. We did that with some M & M fabric for a baby quilt and were quite pleased with the result. Can't wait to see what you decide.

Awesome fabric! I was at Gruber's Quilt Shop in St. Cloud, MN last weekend!
It is a huge store!!! And lots of fun to shop in, too! :)

hperttula123 11-29-2012 03:37 PM

He will love it!!! Heck, any kid that age would love it(I know a few adults that would go nuts for it too...lol)
I can't wait to see it done.

Love the gamer fabric! I have been looking for something like this for the past 2 years for my nephew! Thanks for posting the link to where you purchased it :)
