I bought this fabric to day at an antique store, got 4 1/2 yds. for $8.00, Do you think it will work okay for the OBW quilt?

Thanks for looking and for your opinion.

Momma_K 01-23-2011 01:04 AM

WOW! I like that! It looks an awful lot like something like I have. Sure, it would make a great OBW!! They seem to be getting more popular on here lately... Good Luck!

OBW???

I haven't made one yet (I DO have the fabric for it!) but from what I understand, it's not yardage that is important, but repeats. From the looks of your fabric, it has about an 18" repeat, and for 6 repeats, you'd need 3 yards...soooo You have enough, and then some! You'll have extra to use the original fabric in your quilt! :)

I think it will make some very interesting blocks!

I don't know a things about One Block Wonders, but wow is that fabric gorgeous!

k3n 01-23-2011 04:04 AM

You would have to be really careful as there are so many straight lines that you would end up having to match at the seams. In general One Block Wonders work best with swirly lines. Also, the print is quite small. If it were me, I'd pick another fabric, sorry. :(

Oh wow!

mom-6 01-23-2011 04:15 AM

I think you could get a really pretty OBW out of this!

That is going to be the best obw ever!
That is fabulous fabric on its own as well as a obw. drool. I've been looking for my perfect obw fabric and haven't found it yet... I almost had one - but I had washed my material before I knew about them :'( There is one piece in my stash that would be perfect and more than enough material but it was prewashed already ... it's all good. I'll find one one of these days.

I can hardly wait to see how yours comes along!

Someone in my guilt class made one with similar lines in it and it turned out to be beautiful, you can't ever guess what you will get, the surprise is what makes OBW fun, I would try it, I suspect it will be spectacular

cathyvv 01-23-2011 08:45 AM

I would have a very hard time cutting that fabric up. It is beautiful as is!

The OBW books suggest not using fabrics with smaller designs and straight designs but I have been curious to see how they turn out. Maybe its time to break their rule. I think the greatest thing about a OBW is the surprise as to how they turn out. I hope you give it a try with this fabric. Looking forward to seeing end result.

I think I read on one of Cutebuns posts that if you have washed your fabric that you can still use it, just iron and starch it really good.

Thanks everyone, I fell in love with this piece as soon as I saw it. I got it at a Vintage Antique Store, but it doesn't have any markings on the selvedge so I don't know who made it or how old it is. Anyone have any ideas?

sewwhat85 01-23-2011 12:56 PM

just cant wait to try one of those

This is what I was thinking too. However, we might both be wrong.

Love the colors. Go for it

I can't wait to see this quilt! :D:D:D

Before you plunge ahead w/ this fabric for a OBW, I'd preview what your hex's might look like by using a hinged mirror. Position it open so you can see 6 images in it and slowly slide it along the width of the fabric. This will give you an idea of what your hexagons might look like. If there's too many places with those straight lines, you might want to pick a different fabric for a OBW. See what K3N said.

Thats a very ingenious idea! I never would have thought of that!

I've heard the "rule" about not using patterns with straight lines or boxes -- but I'm finding that it can work out just fine, particularly if you are not going to obsess about having every little match point fit together perfectly -- the overall effect, from a distance you'd normally have from a quilt on a bed or wall, is just fine.

That said, if I really loved a fabric, I would be hesitant to use it in a OBW, since you're left with the colors and little hints of the original pattern, but you lose the original fabrics.
