I am so excited about this swap!! I went to the LQS and Hancock Fabrics and picked out 6 fabrics, 3 for each swap I am in. I hope it is okay to give sneak peak!

Sorry for the lousy pictures. The fabrics are much brighter in person.

I love your choices especially the tools and pencils. They are all great. Love making I Spy quilts. Making a baby one now for a new GN or GN in July.

Your choice of fabrics for the 5" x 5" fabric squares is great.
I like to cut mine 5" by WOF(width of fabric) or selvedge to selvedge)). I place them on top of each other three deep and cut them again 5" and tada your done. Gets them cut really fast when you have to cut 40 of each fabric.

Have fun.

some prints really are more usable (in my opinion) as an individual square/picture when they are "fussy cut" so that each piece is like a picture instead of just cut "wherever"

Examples attached:

Ahhh I like to see the whole bird. That is great but wouldn't it make less 5" squ.

How much fabric did you buy to make 40 squares? That is the ones that you aren't fussy cutting

bearisgray 05-04-2010 01:22 PM

Technically, one could POSSIBLY "get by" with 3/4 of a yard - IF the fabric is cut really straight and it shrinks very little, and there is at least 41 inches of usable fabric across the width. Theoretically, 40 inches should be enough to get 8 squares from. It isn't. There seems to be a bit of "loss" at each cut.

7/8 of a yard (31 1/2 inches) gives one a little wiggle room. If I was buying new fabric and watching my pennies, I would buy 7/8 of a yard. It is so frustrating to be about an inch short and not being able to find any more.

Most people buy a yard in case they mess up a cut - the ruler slips, the cat got in the way, there is a flaw in the fabric, etc.

Fussy cutting usually takes quite a bit more - this is where taking a template along and checking out how it goes is useful.

It is only "necessary" to get 40 5-inch squares from what you have and that it be I Spy type fabric. (and washed)

I Spy type fabric has something that can be identified on it - such as baseballs, cats, macaroni, cars, etc.

Some of the older fabrics are absolutely adorable - and less likely to be duplicated.

You can use different patterns, I believe. The idea is to use all novelty fabrics that kids can pick out recognizeable objects. I have been using 5" squares with 1 1/2" sashing and a border if you like. You can also fussycut a hexagon and sew triangles around each one. The disappearing 9-patch also works. Any other ideas from other quilters?

nice fabric

SherriB 05-07-2010 02:36 PM

I got 1 yard of each fabric. From the fabric I got at the LQS, I probably had about 1/4 a yard left. They are very generous with their cutting.

Fabric from Hobby Lobby and Hancock Fabric left me with less than a 1/4 yard. They cut it exactly with no room for squaring up the fabrics.

I love your fabric choices, great ones for the I Spy!!
