Some Directions for my quilt - with photos!

Hi Everyone - since several of you asked, I'm going to try to post some simple directions for this quilt. Believe me, it goes together quickly and easily, and gives you maximum visual impact.
I will describe the cutting in terms of the colors I used - yellow-ish for thin framing pieces, and batiks for the blocks. For the batiks, I used mostly FQs, and still was able to cut strips out of those. From the yellow-ish fabric, cut strips of 1 1/2 inches, WOF. Cut many of them; you will need them. From half the batiks, cut strips of 6 1/2 inches by WOF. (If you are cutting from a FQ, it won't be too long, but cut it the long way, so it will be 6 1/2 by 22.0 From half the batiks, cut strips of 4 1/2 inches by WOF. Sew a thin yellow strip to each side of the 6 1/2 inch batik strip. You will have a 3-strip panel - thin yellow, batik, thin yellow. With the yellow strips at top and bottom, cut the strip panel into block segments 6 1/2 inches long. The block will measure 6 1/2 by 8 1/2. (batik looks thicker and chubbier in this block) Sew a thin yellow strip to each side of the 4 1/2 inch batik strip. Again, you will have a 3-strip panel. With the yellow strips at top and bottom, cut the strip panel into block segments 8 1/2 inches long. The block will measure 6 1/2 by 8 1/2. (batik looks longer and thinner in this block) When you have enough, sew the blocks together in rows, alternating the blocks. They will line up when you rotate the strips 90 degrees. These pictures show the blocks - the first one shows them side by side, as they would look after cutting. The second shows them lined up and ready to sew together. You can see they will fit together, giving the illusion of different sizes. |
