My daughter picked out the Twiggy fabric line so I'm playing with designs to use it. I got the entire 34 FQ set and I needed to figure out how to use the different fabrics in each of the 4 color ways. They are more vibrant that the picture, especially the deep eggplant purple and the rich brown.
I played around with different block styles between the stars but, I decided to keep it simple and not compete with them (and minimize other piecing). I have 3 yards of border fabric in the second row, 3rd from the left, in the picture of the entire line. It's 78" x 78" as it is plus the outer border of maybe 6". That would make it a total of 90"x90". |
Pretty! I can't wait to see it done!

I got the center square and points for two stars, and a few of the feathers cut out. I thought I better stop cutting and make sure that I really want to do this before I cut any more. one picture is just looking at the colors together. Ignore the flowered background. I need a new ironing board cover and I've got a folded sheet on there for now. :)
I have the Matri Michell feathered star templates. I've had them for many years but have used the shapes for other things, not the star. The most exacting part is the feathers... of course! I took the two FQs for one set of feathers, layed the first one face up on the ironing board and sprayed it with starch. Layed the other fabric face down on the damp piece and smoothed them together and ironed them. They are staying together very well with the starch while I cut strips, cut the triangles from the strips, and sew them together. |
Wow that looks like a tough one....good luck....keep us posted......:-)

That is awesome, now all you have to do is get busy, can't wait to see the end results. Thanks for sharing, Sewbusy

Looks real good to me! Show us when you get farther.

That may be awhile, to get more done. I'm still messing around with the design. The stars are over 27" so if I do solid strips I will have to piece them out of the FQs. So I thought if I am going to piece the strips then why not use more of the beige and make the colored fabric go farther?
I will have to do some serious figuring on whether I can get all of this out of the 34 FQs. I'm still toying with doing a very simple star block around the feathered stars but that's adding even more work to it. |

Or I could reverse the colored and beige strips...
deisions, decisions |
That is going to be very pretty when done!

Started sewing the first block last night. I still have a WHOLE lot of cutting to do but, I'll make this one first so that I find out any problem before doing all of them.
It's broken down into a 9 patch and all of the feathers are attached to the corner squares and side triangles first. There is a blue triangle sewed to each of the 4 corners of the center square (a snowball) and the other 4 blue triangles are sewn to one side of 4 star points. I sewed a scant 1/4 on the feathers but when I went to sew it onto the square I found that my scant was too small, or too big, however you look at it. I sewed the seams in the feathers again closer to 1/4" and that fit good. |
Oh that is going to be so pretty I hope it doesn't give you a hard time because I would love to see it completed.

That is going to be awesome once it's done! WOW!

Pam-This is going to be a really pretty quilt. Thanks for showing us how and inspiring us!

Thanks :-) It's still evolving while I work on the feathered stars. I might not know what it's going to look like until it's done.

It's slow going checking and re-checking every part I sew together. I don't want to get done and then notice that I put a row of feathers the wrong way!
It uses partial seams on the triangle blocks. I've never done that before but it will probably help in the end. I've taken out one seam and re-done it. When sewing the first row of feathers onto the background triangle there is no reference point of where it needs to end up. When I went to pin the star point to it, the row of feathers was too long because of the scant 1/4" seam that I did on the first few. I re-sewed the feather seams at 1/4" exactly and the point fit. On the rest I am going to sew it to the point first, then sew it to the triangle. I wonder if I can even get one star done this weekend. Hopefully it will go faster as I do more of them. |
