Congrats on learning free motion! I am intrigued by your border. Any hints for us quilters trying to do this?

barny 03-30-2012 12:56 PM

That is beautiful. Did you heat set the crayon coloring after the quilt was finished?

I actually heat set the crayon work before I stippled the background. Once it was completely done, I dunked it in lukewarm water and laid it out to dry after blocking it a bit.

A LOT of practicing!!! I love sewing clothes too and by the time I was a junior in high school I had gotten quite good, easy A's in class, but , oh my goodness, you should have seen the clothes I made in junior high, makes me laugh now. But I never gave up, just kept sewing!!! Thanks for the kind words!! martha

Thank you CarrieC, I love your quote!! I think I must have a minimum of 8 seam rippers. I like to purchase them so that they can be found in every nook and corner in the house as I do use them often!!!

ABSOLUELY GORGEOUS!! Did you mark it out first or do it all freehand?

I marked part of the lower feathers. I marked the spines on the upper feather and freehanded the rest other than the part that went underneath, I marked that so that I could find my way!! The heart was a last minute idea!!

Hints for free motion quilting? Practice a lot. I bought Diane Gaudynski's machine quilting books and read them word for word a couple times. She has some amazing tips and shows you exactly how she does her machine quilting. I am also participating in the 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge and it is helping better my skills because I have to practice and do work on designs that are out of my comfort zone!! It is a great challenge!!!
