This is a great project for leftover blocks. Do you just put the key inside and stitch a area around it? Do you wrap the key with batting or fabric before you put it inside? This project is very near and dear to me and I am going to start on one this afternoon. Thank you for the push.

Thank you so much for this post. My father just passed away two weeks ago from AD and Pulmonary Fibrosis. Your post really touched me this morning. I think that this is something I want to start doing to donate to local nursing homes and hospice facilities. It is something I wish I had known about for my dad but might comfort others.

We made "touch blankets" a few years ago for nursing homes. Everyone found touchy-feelie things they had and we just sewed them together however they might fit. We used cottons, plush, faux-fur, corduroy, denim, satin, strong lace, rick-rack; anything you can think of that had a different feel. I had a cut-out of a plush teddy bear, so I appliqued that in one square with button-hole stitch. If a blind person felt around the outside, they could recognize it as a teddy bear. The nursing homes were happy to get them.

That is a great idea. My mom had alzheimers and loved to fold wash cloths, put hair rollers and things back into a bag etc. Wonderful way to keep their hands and minds busy.
