Finished Cheri's Awareness Ribbon Quilt, all quilted and bound
 

I am so happy to have finished this special donation quilt in time for Christmas. The backing is pink and red fleece. I did outline/echo quilting on my Kenmore and a zigzag down the sides in the pink stripe border, which doesn't show up much in the photos. This is a good sized throw quilt. This is a pattern I designed myself and am preparing to sell with part of the proceeds going to cancer research.

Your quilt is beautiful and I'm quite sure you worked very hard on it, but I have to say this. Sadly, I have a couple of dear friends who suffer from recurring bouts with cancer and quite honestly, the very last thing that they want is to be reminded on a daily basis of their health issues. They HATE anything with a pink ribbon attached to it, sometimes they just want to forget!!! All of these women are very brave, far braver than I think I could ever be. So on a day when they're feeling "better" and trying to forget, just for awhile, the battles they're facing, seeing a quilt, or anything for that matter with the symbol of their illness can be a real downer. All of us who have made, or are thinking about making a gift for our friends who are suffering really need to keep this in mind. So make a quilt, make a pillow case make any kind of gift but make it joyful, not another reminder of the pain and suffering these brave ladies are already going through. I'm just saying...

oh munner, you make a very good point, and I agree that anyone should find out as much as possible about the person they are making a quilt for and make it to meet their needs. In this particular case, Cheri is very active in the cause and collects pink ribbon items. It was her husband who chose the kind of quilt for her to have and the colors in it. My donation quilts are made as much as possible to match the likes of the person. I have made horse, bird, panda, car, zoo, bright floral, flower garden, and many others in colors that the person likes, even if I don't care for them myself. I do try to put one small ribbon somewhere on the quilt, even if it's just on the label. That ribbon is about me and my mission and is not a blatant part of the quilt.

I also just want to add, the awareness ribbon was not intended to be the symbol of breast cancer. Rather it is the symbol of the fight for a cure and the end of women having to battle this terrible disease. It is to help spread the word of prevention/early detection by self exam, mammograms and routine exams by your physician. That is why it is called the Awareness Ribbon, and not the Breast Cancer Ribbon. I think it's awesome of Cheri to be active in this campaign to spread awareness of early detection and the wonderful odds that gives for cure. She shares her struggle and is making sure it's not in vain. I am really proud to have the priviledge of donating this quilt to her.
