This fall my dh and I went to an Amish auction and out of all the beautiful quilts he liked this one the best. I couldn't buy it at $900 so I took a picture of the center and drafted my own pattern. I remembered there was a vine around the edge but didn't remember the details and since I had a lot of extra hearts cut out This is what I did. My brain got rattled trying to figure out how to get it all perfectly balanced around the edge so I tossed out the calculator and just drew the edging waves freehand. It is pretty obvious that my waves got tighter the farther I went because none of the sides or corners match. The good part of it is that he probably won't notice and if he does it won't make it of any less worth in his eyes. Recently I asked how I should quilt it. Thanks for all the suggestions. I love feathers but I'm no better at getting them perfect than I did the edge. :) So I decided to outline and cross hatch. It is in 4" squares (the largest my polyester batting recommends) and turned out really soft. I washed it and it bled around the maroon hearts. I will have to get something to pull that out. Until then I boxed and wrapped it so he wouldn't see it. I enjoyed making it, imperfections and all!

At a quilt show in a San Francisco folk art gallery I saw a show, "Four Generations of Quilting". Besides incredible quilts, there was a slide show with an older woman being interviewed about quilts made by her mother down to her grand daughter. They were a Black family and didn't use "patterns" or have any fancy cutters, rulers, etc. The person interviewing asked her, "But what if you make a mistake?" The older woman stopped for a beat, stared at the interviewer, and then burst out laughing. "Honey" she said, "these quilts are made with love, and love isn't ever a mistake!"
I just made my dh a quilt and the mimbas I used are every which way. Oh, NO! It will never make it to a quilt show! Do you think he cares? No way! I was taking care of 2 grandchildren for 6 weeks, making the quilt at their house under very awkard conditions (also teaching the little girl how to quilt). Am I going to redo it? No way. The love is there and, as he pointed out, now you don't have to stand at the bottom of the bed to "see" all the designs, you can see them from any angle (well, sort of). Love isn't ever a mistake! |
it is beautiful. i never even got as far as looking for perfection--you blew me away with all the beautifully appliqued hearts! my hands and eyes would be hollering "uncle" after only a few. your hubby is going to love this forever!

Well if he don't like it send it my way, hearts are my favorite. You did a beautiful job.

I used to live close to Amish country in Ohio. I saw this quilt for sale for $1500 and a guy from NY bought it and never even
blinked an eye. I had to look awfully close to see what you are talking about. Some of the Amish quilts had mistakes that you could see wihout even trying. Your quilt is really beautiful, great job. . |

I looked at the pictures first after reading it was for your husband. My eyes noticed the lovely balanced center and I took in that nice vine with hearts. My eye traveled all around the perimeter; I did not notice that the vine density changed from side to side. I did not notice that the corners were not all the same. Then I returned to read your entire post and re-looked at the quilt. By golly, what you said is true but it is not obvious at all. I just thought I was studying a wonderful, great quilt and was wishing I was the one that had made it. You made a wonderful quilt and I'm sure your husband will treasure it.

This is a gorgeous quilt and althought not manly, it screams love and I bet that's what he'll see. And I didn't even notice the differences until you pointed it out. And when it is on the bed noone, not even you will be able to see both sides at the same time. Thanks for sharing your lovely work with us.

Beautiful quilt and quilting. I always prewash my fabrics with Retayne and haven't had any problems with bleeding. I'll soon be tackling a Batik quilt and maybe some of you could advise if prewashing with or without Retayne is or is not recommended. It's in purples and greens (with some lighter shades of each). Thanks for sharing.
