Finished my first Log Cabin - Calm Sky Log Cabin
3 Attachment(s)
I finished my first log cabin. Very pleased how it turned out! Still needs to be washed to get out the quilting stencil and measuring chalk lines, but couldn't wait to put in pictures! I named it: Calm Sky Log Cabin.
Finished blocks are 14" Finished Quilt size is: 99 x 114" It was made using the Quilt As You Go method, done by sections (rows) with no sashing. Border added to top and bottom to frame. The dark brown is the last log on each block with that same fabric strip used for the top and bottom border. Don't mind the wrinkle in the third picture at the bottom of the quilt. One of the kitties blankets was laying on top of the bed when I put the quilt on it for pictures! :) Fabric used: Farmer's Daughter Jelly Rolls by Pam Buda Marcus Fabrics (logs) Vinery on Cream by Keepsake Calico (logs, backing, binding) Quilting done with stencil and also fmq - meandering clouds |

I finally decided to just take a deep breath and go for it, and I will definitely be making more from this pattern. Thank you for the nice compilment. It is also, my very, very first Free motion quilting. (used a stencil on part of it, the rest was free motion) Before, on all my other quilts, I have always done ruler quilting or in the ditch. |
Nice quilt, great job !

Beautiful quilt! Love log cabins. Nice work!

Your quilt is beautiful. I've always wanted to try the QAYG method. Did you use a tutorial online & if so could you link to it. There are so many ways to do QAYG. I did a small placemat using Leah Day's method (just to see if I could do it) & it turned out good. I'd like to try a few more from different tutorials before I tackle a large quilt.

I just love log cabins, yours turned out beautiful and I love the quilting you did. I have been meaning to try Eleanor Burns QAYG method for a log cabin, I have the book. You give me hope.
Thank you for sharing. |

For the Quilt as you Go without sashing, I finally found one that I liked and it worked well for me. It was Carolyn Forster that won me over on her method. I found a very, very short demo video of hers, which just perked my interest in her QAYG method, (unfortunately it was very short and didn't show much) Here is that video: Quilting on the Go Tip . I was able to find her book that all the instructions in it. I really liked that, as I could refer to her book as needed. This is the book Quilt As You Go: a practical guide to 14 inspiring techniques & projects |

Thank you for sharing. I was nervous about getting all the logs cut right and this ruler made it so easy. |

Great job. It reminds me of my first quilt which was a log cabin. I love the traditional blocks

A must do on every quilter's list in one form or another. A basic and an exercise in accurate cutting, color selection and placement. You GOT IT! Well done and a lovely result.

Congratulations! Log Cabin is my favorite design and yours is great!
|
Very nice. You may just inspire me to actually make one instead of just drool over them. I really like the name you have given your quilt. Never having thought about QAYG as a method, it needs investigating. Thanks for showing us this.

Absolutely beautiful quilt! Hugs Kathryn

Great quilt! The colors go well together. Log Cabin is my favorite quilt and have made several of them. They are addictive!
