Finished Wine Country

2 Attachment(s)
From the Fons&Porter's Quilting Quickly, I finished the Wine Country quilt I will give to my friend today. I've attached the tutorial from YouTube where you can see how easy it is to put together.

The strips were already sewn from my Aunt's stash (now mine), so I cut and assembled. I noticed a wave on top and bottom after I laid it out flat. Is that from the binding being stretched as I sewed it? Or the quilter stretching it as it got quilted? It seemed pretty square and flat when I started so I'm pointing the error my direction.

The back is obviously different from the pattern. My aunt put 5yds of the black crackle leaf print in the same box and I also had other batiks so I created a pieced back.

Lovely quilt! It is an art to sew the binding on neither too tight or not tight enough. I lay my quilt out on a flat surface after each side of the binding is sewn on if I have a quilt with stretchy piecing. You might have more luck using a walking foot to sew on your binding.

I love that!!! beautiful colors too! I want one!

Front & back are both beautiful.

It's gorgeous, front and back.

Very pretty quilt.

Love your quilt. The fabrics are so pretty and the pattern adds such interest. Did you check the quilt and actually square the quilt? Don't pull or tug the binding when attaching to the quilt. Do you have a walking foot for your machine?

Thanks for the inspiration. I watched the video and considering using the pattern for a scrappy quilt. Thanks!

Beautiful quilt! The colors are so rich.

A lovely finish...nice that you are putting your Aunt’s stash to good use. Thank you for sharing the video and your wonderful quilt.

Just clicked the link and it took me to an Amazon page about wine country not a Fons and Porter Tutorial. Just and FYI.

A walking foot has saved the day for me in putting the binding on. I just lay the binding on top of the quilt and let it sew. I don't pull at all. Both sides of your quilt are very nice indeed.

Wow, that's gorgeous!!!
About binding- I was taught not to stretch it when applying to the quilt.
You did a wonderful job!

Nice job and great colors.

Beautiful quilt!!!

What a beautiful quilt! I try to cut my binding on the lengthwise grain instead of the crosswise grain. The lengthwise strips don’t stretch at all.

Interesting. It took me to YouTube. I recopied here. https://youtu.be/8eF6Egy3ru8

Just beautiful! Nice work.

Thank you all for the lovely compliments and advice on binding. I’ll try my walking foot next time. I held it straight and apparently pulled a little when applying. The quilter squared the quilt. My mom also offered not all squares may have been the exact size. It wasn’t noticeable when I gave it to the friend I made it for.

Neato! I have to check my copies of Fons and Porter. You've inspired me.;)

Your friend is going to love this! I like the backing too. Let us know her reaction.

Binding can be tricky. However, when it is used no one will notice.

I have a similar fabric to the light batik with purple circles.

I try to see a picture in every quilt and this one definitely tells me one. I see the plumy shades of the rich dark grapes, the earthy tones of the fields and corks as well as the clear blue skies overhead. The quilting compliments the design.

I always use my walking foot when doing the binding.

Very pretty quilt and love the fabrics that make up the pattern.

Nice wine country quilt.

I love the motion your quilting gives to it. Wonderful!

Very nice! I really like your back.

audsgirl 06-02-2019 05:16 PM

This is a beautiful quilt! And the back is just as rich looking.

I clicked on the word watch in her message and it took me to the video.

Thanks for the link to the pattern. I think this would look good in scraps, and I have lots of 2.5 inch strips.

Chris Anders 06-03-2019 05:04 AM

Very pretty! You did a nice job!

ABDraz 06-03-2019 06:13 AM

My friend was thrilled! She visited and I had it finished. The friend she was staying with is a graphic designer/painter and brought me quilt books she did the graphic illustrations for. So there was joy abound. The books are: Enchanted Views: quilts inspired by wrought iron designs, 250 continuous line quilting designs, Ruth B McDowell: When Quilters Gather (20 patterns of pieces at play).

If your quilt is a little wavy, you need to stretch the binding as you attach it. If it's very wavy, stretch a little more. If it's lengthwise fabric, you can stretch quite a bit. If it's width of fabric, don't stretch too much.

I have always stretched my binding (a little or a lot) as it is being applied and have never had a wavy edge on a quilt.
