I really, really, really want to keep the wonky edge, BUT can someone please help me with how to accomplish that!! I thought it would be a piece of cake, but WOW all those inside corners...ughhh!! I am also tossing around the idea of binding it...BUT again, all those insides =D

Sorry, I can't help, but I love seeing the progress of your quilt. I'm really not a pastell type of person myself but I truly like your GFG and have watched the progress so far. Curious to see how you solve this last problem.

TacoMama 05-17-2011 08:54 PM

Sorry I can't help either, but love your quilt!!!!!

You've come this far ... you can do it!

Patience, Kitten! :)

SharonD 05-17-2011 09:58 PM

I think the wonky edging would be nice. If you did a thin binding maybe that would go round the corners easier. What about using commercial binding it is usually a lot thinner than the fabric we use, but might not be as robust.
Other than that, I like your last picture too.
I like your quilt though, pretty colors.

On edges like that you have to make bias binding so it can be turned.

alikat110 05-18-2011 02:33 AM

What about whole cloth binding. Ive seen this in a magazine, but dont remember which one. Maybe you could find a tut??? Best of luck.

Not necessarily. It's not a curved edge. Miter the outies and clip the innies.

adorabowe 05-18-2011 04:02 AM

I like the 1st idea you posted. I saw a pattern for honeycomb patchwork bag in the Australian 50th edition of Quilters Companion that had it finished with the inside layered under the uneven edges of hexagons to create a smooth edge, like the examples you posted. It looked nice. Unfortunately I couldn't find it online but maybe you will have a better search :) good luck!

Here's a video on one way to do it - her hexies are bigger I think but in theory if you're very patient it could be done:

Yours is a real beauty!

This is my thought also. It goes on like a facing.

PERFECT!! Thank you soooooo much...so much better than the winging plan I thought I was going to have to do...now to pick it back up and finish it =D I thought it was going to end up unfinished in frustration, but now I am sooooo excited to get it finished!!!

I love that finishing technique. When I get mine done that's how I'm finishing it. Thanks.

grendelskin 05-18-2011 12:56 PM

I just found another one - more hexies folded over to make a row on the back:

Grendelskin, Thanks so much for posting this video. Me FGF is almost finished and I was considering cutting off all off the little tabs on the edges and putting a straight binding on my quilt. Not, this video made it so easy and I'm not losing the effects. This is a great video. Thanks again.

The antique ones I've seen have one of 2 methods. One is called birthing or pillowcase style. The other is a modified version of the same. You make a batting, strip of backing and top sandwich, sew along the edges of the hexies and cut away the excess, and turn it right side out then hand sew (!) a center backing panel over the rest of the back. What I have NOT seen is any binding. These edges, I'm told, are called "knife edge".
