Fire Quilt

1 Attachment(s)
A fire quilt for DH who is a volunteer fire fighter. It is a large throw rug 51 x 68 inches (130 x 175 cm).

I quilted it with stitch in the ditch. It presented a problem because of the colour change across each horizontal section. I discovered this great tool I have on my sewing machine where I can set it to start with 2 stitches in place, continue until I stop it and it automatically does 2 stitches in palce and cuts the thread. So the bottom thread was already buried and some of the top threads needed cutting off but not burying. I was really impressed with the stitch.

This meant I could do the black and then the colour separately. Rather than change the thread all the time I did the colours first doin the horizontals and the end "verticals" so on the back it looks like the shape of the fire Then I did the black the horizontals. The bobbin colour matched the backing for both the colour section and the black.

This quilt is going to be used everyday in winter and washed a lot so I also stitched in the ditch for a lot of the "verticals" too.

This is my 5th Quilt.

Great job! I seem to remember you asking for advice on the quilting awhile back, happy you got it figured out!

That is awesome. I couldn't use it as a rug. Too pretty!

It sure does look like a real fire and the tiny sparks floating above add the perfect touch to a toasty looking fire!

That's such a striking quilt. (a little pun intended) It looks perfect! I have a firefighter married to one of my granddaughters and I have struggled with a quilt pattern for them. You may have just helped me choose.
