First attempt at QAYG

Today I decided to try the Quilt as you Go method. It's something I've been looking into for a long time & finally decided to try Leah Day's method that she demonstrates on a tutorial here:

https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...53C8&FORM=VIRE

I really found that I like her method.
I decided to make some string blocks but instead of squares, I made them rectangular. I quilted them in just straight, simple lines & then joined them together. I'll probably use this little sample as a place mat (or something). :)

If & when I ever get my Calif. King quilt top finished I will use this technique on it.

I have wanted to try this but haven't yet. Maybe when I get around to my king size bed quilt... one day!

Thanks for sharing!

Cute mat, will check out the link when I get a few more minutes, thanks!

Good job, I would have to learn the technique in order to do it. I remember years ago there was a lovely lady here on the board, who did a tutorial on this process but I just couldn't get it so never tried. I have a pattern for a oversized sort of crazy block that I would love to try this on I think it's about 25 inches square. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Very pretty.

There are at least two tutorials on this board with good directions on the QAYG technique. I have made quilts using them, easy to understand and do.

Your little quilt looks great. I think this is a great technique and there are several variations for which tutorials are available. I know they are some more time consuming that long arm quilting. But, they allow the users of DSMs to have great looks without very major expense of money and space.

Well done, you should be very pleased with your effort.

Thank you for posting the link to Leah Day. I had not seen that method, and it looks so much easier than what I was trying to do. Me and Mr. froggit will be spending the day getting ready to do it this way.

Also, you might want to try QAYG by columns. No handwork and only working with the width of your block. I found this is a great method. I've added sashing to some of my quilts. Way easy and things go very quickly. I HAVE discovered that I like to leave at least 1/2"on the edge that I add the next column to. Plus, that way I quilt over the seam when I work on the 2nd, 3rd etc columns. WAY easy. Try it. I love it because I'm not into all the handwork of the other methods. This gal has 4 videos on this.

Tucky, thanks for that link! I've watched her 4 part tutorial many times & have really considered using that method. Did I miss something in Leah Day's method? I did not have to do any handwork on the one I made. Well, except for the binding....I always machine sew the binding to the front, flip it to the back & then hand stitch it down on the back for the final finish. I better go back & view Leah's tutorial again.

I made QAYG quilts by Georgia Bonesteel when I first started quilting over 35 years ago but it involved hand stitching and I didn't enjoy that. I finally found a video on You Tube called Quilt As You Go Made Modern and I want to try it. No hand stitching and no sashing. It is something I would enjoy.

That's wonderful. I have tried quilt as you go, but was no good at it. Yours came out great.
