I made the first block this evening to see how it was going to come together. My first mistake was to not use the Marti Michell corner cutting template for the points. The two small triangles didn't line up so I took it apart, cut the corners with the template, and did it again. Much better and easier to line them up.

My oldest daughter picked out this fabic, it's called Pepper Metro Market. It's cute. All of the blocks will have the white and cherry background and the baskets will be mixes of the black and reds and yellows.

Wow! your points look so good! What is that gadget you mentioned? Maybe that's why I can't do points very well. Your block looks great.

ooooooooo that is so pretty

That fabric really is cute. I thought it was strange that my daughter picked it. It has CHICKENS!!! And eggs, and egg beaters. She doesn't like flowery at all.

Since she picked Metro Market, I chose a basket for the design. I looked everywhere for a basket pattern that was solid pieces like this, not a bunch of triangles together. The only one I found was this 10" block but that's fine really. I don't have a set size for the quilt. It's not for her bed because she says the dogs sleep on it.

I use the Marti Michell corner cutting template, have ever since at least 10 years ago when a BOM I did used one of her template sets. It's not always necessary to use it on squares but, let me tell you, I used it on the recent Feathered Star and lining up squares/triangles and a diamond with it is invaluable.

When I did the first test of the basket without the triangle corners cut I was basically lining up where I "thought" the point of the small triangle should be. About 1/4" past the point of the large triangle, right? Looked fine until I did the second side and when I opened it up to press it I saw that the line across the bottom of the two triangles wasn't straight.

Sorry!! The chickens aren't in these fabrics shown but they are in the FQ set I got, a yellow background and a red background. There are only two FQs of it so I didn't use it on the first block in case I really messed up. It also has apples and I got the black with apples on it in yardage for the outside border.

Oh my gosh! I am in shock at this reply from my daughter when I sent her the picture of the block.

"How cute! I showed the girls here and they like the colors & design too... I can't wait. I should probably go out and help put at least one together since it's my quilt. ;) "

I replied: Absolutely you should!! :D

I'll let my know daughter that you all like her fabric choice. :) If I spend some dedicated time on it it should be a pretty quick one. There are only 6 pieces per block plus sewing the handle on. I'm just top stitching the handle down both sides of the strip very close to the edge so that's just a couple minutes work. I thought of hand applique but... noooo. I did another block last night but most of the time was spent getting the backing into the quilting frame for the log cabin quilt.

How do I get so many tops done? I get home from work around 5:30, spend an hour or so unwinding, make coffee, read mail, maybe check the stock market and investments, get something comfortable on, then I head to the sewing room. Turn on the TV to listen to and work on something.

I live alone so there's no one to want me to do something else... like cook dinner. I'm not usually hungry for dinner since I eat a good meal at lunch. I do enjoy my time alone after interacting all day at work. There's not much housework to do either.

When I did the first one without using the point template and it wasn't even across the bottom, I remembered to use it.

This is using the point cutting template. Without it, where EXACTLY do I line up the points of the small triangles to the large one? It didn't come out even just doing it.
