So I made this mini rag quilt playing around and messed it up! I'm not sure how to put the stars opn now (I kinda got overly excited and forgot them) ...the pattern said half inch seam allowance and when I washed it it didn't really rag up well. I used all cotton FQ's. Any suggestions?

I think people wash them more than once, not sure but it seems that the more it's washed and dried the more it will rag.

CoriAmD 07-07-2011 09:44 AM

did you clip the seams before you washed... this helps with the "ragging"

I would wash it again, then use tiny star buttons.

there are iron on star appliques that would work if you do not want to do them by hand...   Naomi

For the stars, maybe you could use a potato and cut your own little star 'stamp.' and some fabric paint. Since your flag is rustic, you could just stamp little stars randomly on the blue field. what you have done is really cute!

That's sounds good! After all it won't be something that is washed a whole bunch.

I also like the button idea...I will try washing it a few more tomes to see if it raghs up any better! Thanks Ladies! I Love this board...gives me a lot more confidence to try things when I know there is a gr8 group of ladies williing to set me straight!

It's hard to tell, but it appears the seams may not have been clipped? That will speed the ragging considerably!

Clipped ever so often along the seam line or just at the ends?...I did clip the spots where the seams overlapped but the whole thoing

Need to clip the whole thing about 3/8 inch apart and 1/4 inch deep. Works wonders

chelgvns 07-07-2011 11:32 AM

Thanks! - will do this and let u know how it turns out!

kraftykimberly 07-07-2011 11:47 AM

Have to agree with previous posters, gotta do that clipping to get the nice fluffy raggy look and feel to come together. Just go back and clip closer together and run it through the wash again, Im sure it will come out just like you envisioned. Let us know how it goes and post an "after" shot for us to see.

I always use flannel when I make rag quilts and clip all the seams throughout the whole quilt, then wash and dry several times. Should "rag" up nicely.

I've never seen a "ragged flag" before.
Show us again after you get it clipped & washed!
I bet you'll love the new look!

It looks like you had fun

feffertim 07-07-2011 03:12 PM

cotton does not rag very well, you need flannel or homespun to get a big rag effect

blueangel 07-08-2011 03:23 AM

Nice.
