First original quilt.

Perhaps you've seen me go on and on about the Modern Quilt Guild's 100 days of quilts. Perhaps not. But, let me just say that I have been so inspired by the modern movement that I couldn't stop myself from making my own liberated quilt.
The backing fabric was my inspiration. I dyed all the solids for the front and just sort of let the design happen as I went along. I quilted it in straight lines that remind me of plaid. The first photo shows the backing, and the second is taken beside my porch where the tulips are confused by the 50 degree weather we've had the last week and are sprouting! Awesome Dixie! It's very contemporary all around! Kudos!

Awesome. I really like your hand dyed fabric. And the quilting is perfect and fits the design.
|
Contemporary isn't normally something I lean towards but I love your design! The quilting really enhances the geometric's and the color is wonderful!

The center of the chain (berry color) is the most consistent of the dye jobs...they are all berry and do show different in the light. The yellow green is slightly variegated, and the indigo is just plain splotchy in the picture, but, I didn't notice it until I saw the photos. I didn't really intend to dye the solids, but, I could not find fabric to pull from the back, so I got a navy for the main color and used a red violet. The berry was a pink that also went into a red violet bath. The yellow green started out as unbleached cotton and I layered yellow and green until it looked right. I used I-dyes, as that's what I could source locally. Any future dyes I will order from Dharma Trading company and use fixatives because the purples ran pretty bad and the green is now an olive shade. 3 color catchers came out of the wash royal purple. It's not ruined, but, it's not what I intended. It truly was a fun process, and I'm more happy with the results than anything else I've made so far. (not saying a lot since this is only number 3 or 4). |
All I can say is "WOW". That is an outstanding quilt.

Thanks for all the nice comments! I know that non-traditional quilting isn't everyone's thing, but, as long as we all keep creating some beauty in the world, we are all working towards the same goal!

Can't wait to see what you cook up! |
Dixie - when I see quilts like yours I grow to like contemporary quilting more and more! I'm so impressed that you dye your own fabrics! The interplay between your backing fabric & front, with color, pattern and design, is lovely and well done!
|
Terrific quilt!
|
May I ask, what do you use to dye your fabrics? Any special treatments to make sure they are colorfast? Thanks in advance Dixie!

It did run off quite a bit of color when I washed it. I wish now that I had done a couple of washes before I had cut it and pieced it. I'm still on the learning curve with the chemicals! |
Thank you for the information Dixie! I'd like to get brave enough to try some artistic home dyed fabrics. Kudos to you!

Just terrific, great job, thanks for sharing
