Greetings,

I picked the yellow brick road as my first project... due to a fat quarter problem that I had nothing to do with, I had to scratch my head and adjust the blocks from 9" square to 8 1/4" square... so now I have to figure out a border and get a backing... anywho... I had a few left over blocks I intend to use to make a pillow and here is the picture of the pillow top below.


I will get a picture of the quilt top as soon as I get a chance. It's not perfectly lined up here and there, but oh well. I did learn a lot as I was making it. This brings me to a question:

:?: When you put your blocks together, do you sew all the row first, or all the columns first, or one by one as you go or ???

As far as how to put the blocks together??? It depends on the entire layout of the quilt...I generally go across in rows...depending on how the entire layout works...if it works better for me, heck..I'd do them in columns in a heartbeat :lol:

I usually sew my blocks into rows and then the rows together. To keep the bulk down when I'm sewing, I'll sew, for example, Rows 1 & 2 together. Then Rows 3 & 4 together. Then sew those 4 rows together. (Does that make sense??)

Yes it does. I did the same for the coverlet, but b/c my blocks were not perfect I got a few surprises here and there. If I wouldn't have had to change the size, which caused me to make more mistakes, I think I might have had a better top. Now I'm considering free motion instead of stitching in the ditch b/c of it. I'm shaking in my boots at the notion of free motion though. I'm trying to figure out what pattern would be easiest :)

Love your pillow top. How I sew my blocks together depends on the quilt. I usually sew the rows first if I have a choice.

It really won't matter if there are mistakes in your FMQ..when you are finished and you step back from it...they won't really show up if you don't use a thread color that stands out!! Isn't that a great secret???!!!! :D Now...SSSSSHHHHHH...don't spread it around too much, we want everyone to think we are soooo talented and perfect!! hee heee heee :lol: :lol:

The colors are pretty!

You did a very nice job! I really love the colors. Yellow brick road is a pattern I've been wanting to do. Maybe I'll get to it this summer, perhaps for my friend's baby's blanket I'm going to make. :D

Since I have from dark red to off white to pink to yellow to dark blue ... I'm starting to wonder what color is missing :)

It's really hard to find such thread. Any suggestions? I got a variegated yellow one b/c I intend to do the backing in variegated yellow.

I always sew the blocks for the rows across.
Some will sew the blocks for the rows down.
I don't really think it makes a difference, just a preference as to how you want to do it.

That is great. I love the colors and just like you I am scared to do the quilting to. I have several things that need to be finished and quilted. Just scared to try and really do not know where to start.

I think so-- if I quilt in the ditch I will wound up with jagged lines which will be obvious on the back since I have a few squares that didn't line up as well as the sample pictured here. However, I've never free motion quilted so I'm wondering if that won't actually be worse in the end, but I'll have to bite the bullet some time... why not now... debating.

I think I will look at this quilt as a learning quilt. I'm now considering doing the stitch in the ditch and then do free motions quilting of different kind between each stripe or square or whatever I decide. Pondering... Call it a free motion sampler or something like that. I think by the end of the quilt I'll have that scare bug out of my system :)

I have made severtal Yellow Brick Road quilts. You sew blocks into horizontal rows, then rows together two at a time and then all. My pattern has a suggested layout but it isn't necessary. YBR is so easy and adaptable. Enjoy!

I have actually used like the yellow varigated on the back where you want it, then I've used a monofilament on the front. I know...I know...the cotton thread police can come chase me down, but I always use the mono for my stitch in the ditch (because I'm not nearly as good with my matching up as I'd like to be..so it doesn't show with the mono)..then when I didn't want the quilting to take away from a fabric or change the color of it..I've used the monofilament. It seems to work just fine and I don't mind that it isn't 100% cotton.

Stsrted this quilt four years ago for my ds and dil. They divorced so I decided to finish it for my self.

Moose I love those colors! You might try a rainbow colored thread for the top and whichever color matches the back for bobbin.

I really like the batik blocks you've used. The pillow top looks just lovely.

Don't be afraid of free motion. Make up some samples with a top,batting and backing. Use some leftovers. Then practice, practice, practice. The nice part is if you make a mistake, you are usually the only one who knows.

I have no left overs... I just started quilting and used every bit of fabric LOL I'll have to look around the house for scraps from other projects.
