Good job! Scrappy quilts are fun to make and when you're "winging it" it can take longer than if you're following a preplanned pattern, but as yours shows, it is time well spent!

For some reason, the quilts I've design as I go are the ones that keep me up at night. If I have a pattern and planned quilt it bores me quickly. Love the colors, so bright and cheerfully.

Thank you, everyone, for your words of encouragement. As a beginner, I'm a bit like a sponge right now. I appreciate the advice and feedback.

I do like to wing it....with some new skill or block to try out. I'm new at quilting, so when I said I did a scrappy quilt, there's a limited scrap pile to pull from. I had a fall table runner, baby quilts I've been sending to Annaquilts for her local NICU, a baby quilt I made for a friend, and a couple of classes from JoAnn's. Apparently, I like pinks and oranges together.

This morning I stumbled on these useful tips for scrappy quilts at generations-quilt-patterns.com. I think they are very useful for a beginner like me. But I'm going to have to wait until I have a more substantial stash to follow them.
To make a controlled scrappy quilt use the following guidelines:
  • Choose a focus object of pleasing colors
  • Choose fabrics for the project stash that are friends, but not clones, of your initial choice
  • No fighting between choices (trust your gut)
  • Use simple rules to choose fabrics for each block such as each color can only appear once
  • If you want a certain ‘color cast’ to your quilt change the rule
  • Enjoy the process; revel in the new combinations this method brings you
