Flying in the Autumn Winds
4 Attachment(s)
My granddaughter asked for either a wall hanging or a quilt with horses, blue and fall as the theme. I thought I would do a wall hanging, but this is what I ended up with. I found the free horse picture online at www.shutterstock.com and just blew it up to the size I needed, then designed around it. So the appliqued center panel is 24 x 32. I quilted the center with outlines of mountains and clouds at the top and scattered ____\|/____ to represent grass at the bottom. I chose pinwheels and flying geese because they "fly" in the wind. The flying geese have hearts quilted, and in the pinwheels I did a squiggle connecting the darker wings. The 2 blue inside borders have continuous leaves. I just quilted simple diagonal lines in the outside border. I am really pleased with how it turned out. It is the first quilt that I have designed.

Great quilt!

Wonderful quilt! I would be very surprised if the gd did not love it. The horse center is fantastic and I personally love how you both pieced and quilted the borders.
edited: Forgot to ask what method you used to applique the horse. You can almost hear it's thundering hoofs. |
Beautiful, great work.
|
I love the way you did the horse! Great job on the whole quilt!
|
She will adore it!

I used heat and bond to hold down the pieces, then I did a satin stitch around the outside. The brown thread matched the fabric perfectly. When I was quilting, I used the same brown thread and fmq just inside of the satin stitching. You can't see this unless you have a magnifying glass, yet it holds the layers together.
