FMQ Wholecoth Placemat Project from Craftsy Class

4 Attachment(s)
Here's another project from Cindy Needham's "Design It; Quilt It" Craftsy class. This is a wholecloth placemat; the first of 4 that I am working on. Each one will be a different design, so stay tuned for each of the others as I finish them. (Did I mention that I'm LOVING this class!!!)

I did the quilting using my DSM, a Juki TL98Q. I drew my design out on freezer paper before I started, and did quite a bit of marking with water soluble pencils on this piece before I started stitching using Superior Threads "Magnifico" 40 wt. poly thread. This is my first experiment using both the parallel lines and the cathedral window motifs.:)

I'm just in awe! I keep reading and seeing gorgeous outcomes for those that take the Craftsy classes...just wonder what their skill level was BEFORE taking the class??? I can't fathom I could learn to produce this from a class....were you a very accomplished quilter before the class? Curious, and thanks for sharing!!!

gabeway 01-23-2013 08:02 AM

grammysharon 01-23-2013 08:20 AM

Dejahg~I've been working on my FMQing for 3 years or so in my spare time and was already comfortable with my machine and with doing feathers, etc. What this class is teaching me is better design skills. I'm learning how to combine motifs, stack designs on top of one another, and utilize background "shadow" textures. The cathedral window and parallel lines are new to me also. I'm learning so much from this class that will help to make me a better FMQer! If you check out some of my posts from the last couple of years, you'll see what I was doing "before" this class. "After" this class, I am starting to be able to make my designs have more dimension and texture, whereas before, they were seeming flat.

I think there are other Craftsy classes that might focus more on building FMQing skills, then you can move on to something like this.

It is very beautiful. What brand pencil are you using to get such fine detailing?

feline fanatic 01-23-2013 09:38 AM

Definitely droolworthy.

I used Sewline fabric pencils http://www.sewline-product.com/Sewline_Fabric_Pencil with the pink ceramic lead for this one. (Note: ALWAYS test first...I ruined a baby quilt using the grey, graphite lead that came with this pencil...now my daughter's dog has that quilt.)

I didn't mark all the details; just things like the on-point square, the square grid for the cathedral windows, the arc edge for the border, and the spine and outer boundary for the feather. It was great for marking the ½" cathedral window grid especially! On this piece it washed out just fine when I soaked the piece for blocking.

Wonderful job, you are inspiring to us all. I too will have to get to my Craftsy class, sooner rather than later. Too many ideas/techniques and too little time.
