Okay, so it's not a cute little Featherweight born the same year as me, and it's not the humdinger of a leftover stash of a quilter who can no longer quilt. But it is for quilting.

Bonnie Hunter was the guest speaker at our guild last night and today she is teaching a class.... and I'm not there. :-(

So I headed to Goodwill, which is where Bonnie said she finds some really great 100% cotton extra large mens shirts for less than $5 each. She has a great book out called "Scraps and Shirttails: Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle - The Art of Quilting Green"

I can't wait to cut these shirts up

They look like they would be nice fabrics in a quilt!

I see a manly quilt in the works - don't forget to save the buttons.

Congrats on your find! I do it too. Save the buttons for other projects also. :)

Heck, if I brought them home, I would have to cut them up immediately, or my husband would take them & wear them. :O)

Hey... i think my hubby has one of those shirts. :)

Good for you! Have you priced shirting fabric lately? Whoa! I'll go to the thrift store any time rather than pay high $$$!

SherriB 01-26-2011 02:28 PM

Awesome! If you have a Salvation Army near you, they often have sales on shirts for $1.00 a piece.

What a great idea! I frequent the Goodwill shops, & the like, but never thought of getting shirts. I'll have to keep this in mind. What a fabulous board for an abundance of info & tips!

Lots of fabric there. I've even seen some quilts that use the pockets and cuffs. Have fun and be creative.

Great find.

I did the same thing on a half-price day. I wanted to do the seven shirts quilt. Started cutting down the shirts and really disliked it, I would much rather cut from a piece of fabric. Got partway done cutting and my son said "Don't cut that one, thats too nice - I want it!" A good excuse not to keep going. Maybe some day I'll be determined to finish!

I have a pretty good collection I bought over the last couple of years. I haven't decided which pattern I am going to use for them! Good excuse huh? I will get to them in time!!
I'll be watching to see what you make! :D

Great idea!! I'll have to remember that when my xxxl guy decides to ditch his somewhat worn shirts.

There was a fella on here this week that was gonna send his old shirts to goodwill instead he cut up the 100% cotton. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-93172-1.htm

A local thrift store here has 99 cent Monday. Each week a different color tag is featured. That can be a good deal for a large shirt. Of course a garage sale could be less but there is a good selection in a large thrift store.
