Maybe you could use snaps or zippers to make one that you could take apart to wash.

Perfect quilt to sit/lay a baby on when the family is over and ogling over the little one down on the floor in the middle of the room! Soft, pillowy, comfortable.

Oh, I think I missed the top question too. It's polyfil stuffing. Yeah, it's heavy, less than the first one I made though, only the borders have a layer of cotton batting in them, not the whole thing. There's a "premium" polyfil that's silkier & lighter weight than the regular type, it's only $3.50/bag around here.
