I agree with quilter 70, my first thought was a signature quilt...

Mona Marie, I think you are right. The original pattern may have been for signatures BUT this one is a jewel of a quilt. Perhaps just using up scraps.

Calicocat, this is a beautiful quilt and for whomever....A family treasure!

Really nice quilt. Not a clue to pattern name, though.

I think it looks great! But I think this can easily be made by sewing three strips togetherand taking say like an x-block ruler and cutting them at an angle. then you have your slant but also a straight block..if that makes sense? It's the same technique as the lil twister.

I think your idea is something I could do. I would love to make this quilt but math hurts my brain. That's why your idea is so straight forward to me. Thanks for spending some time thinking this through. I know I didn't start this thread, but you helped me!

Just wonderful and thank you for sharing, I don't have a clue to the name

Very pretty scrappy.

Thanks Lynda in Ohio. I added your design of Lightening to my USB/Flashdrive of patterns I want to make. That is exactly like the quilt. You Rock!

would love to have this pattern beautiful

Beautiful quilt and great use of scraps....quite unique and different. Yes, I think Lynda got the pattern correct...thanks:)

I can see that made with men's shirt plaid fabrics.

ruthie 04-14-2012 07:14 PM

Lovely quilt. Don't know the name of the pattern though. Good luck finding it.

nstitches4u 04-14-2012 07:18 PM

I've never seen a quilt like this. I hope someone can help you.

Very interesting post...thank you to everyone!!

I don't know the name of this quilt but I'm already trying to figure out how to make it quickly. I think I might make one where I cut and sew three strips together and then use a small square ruler to cut the sqares out from the three strips sewn together but cut it on an angle. What a quick, cute summer quilt this would make. Thank you for sharing!

carolaug 04-15-2012 04:35 AM

I bet Jenny Dolan could figure out how to do this and do a Tute...Hope she reads this!

My sample from EQ uses 6" blocks (10 rows x 12 columns) and finishes at 60" x 72". I'm going to do a super easy tutorial for you all. Be back with it in a flash.

I don't know the name but I sure like the quilt.

You could put a piece of that glo-tape from the corner to the halfway mark on the template and just lay that on the seam every time.

kydeb 04-15-2012 03:58 PM

I love your design! Saved it and hope to someday do it! Tutorial would be great :) Thanks!!

Think its a signature block. Usually the printed parts are white so people can sign it. Than the printed fabric is where the blue fabric is

milikaa1 04-15-2012 06:43 PM

I don't know but I like it!

Jannie 04-15-2012 07:21 PM

Isn't it wonderful. No matter what question is asked, someone here on the board has the right answer!!

Tutorial for the block

Here's the quick and easy way to make the block with strips. It's not difficult, but it does waste a lot of fabric. Ignore these fabrics. They're scraps.

1. Cut three strips. The middle strip should be 3 1/4" wide and 9 1/2" long. The top and bottom strips are 3 3/4" wide and 9 1/2" long. These strips are actually a bit longer.

2. Sew the strips together with a 1/4" seam. Press toward the middle strip.

3. Place your 6 1/2" square ruler on top of the block. Placement is very important.

4. On the corner of your ruler find the point that is 1/4" in from the bottom and 1/4" from the left side. Place that spot over any point in the seam between the middle strip and the bottom strip.

Once you've got that lined up, place the similar marking in upper right corner of your ruler on a spot in the seam between the middle strip and the top strip.

Make sure that the lower left corner is still lined up correctly.

Another spot to check are the other seams on the left and right sides. They should line up with the 3 1/4" mark on the ruler. On the ruler in the photo the line is in white. You can fudge this a bit, but not too much!

5. Cut around the 6 1/2" ruler. You've got a block!

Are the solids cut on the grain (where they are sewn to the prints)? The prints and plaids are.

earthwalker 04-15-2012 11:58 PM

Beautiful quilt, thanks for sharing. Lynda you are a legend, thanks for your work on this....I think we will be seeing "offspring" of this quilt on our board soon:)

deenatoo 04-16-2012 09:09 AM

Wow...didn't take you long to design that....thanks!! On my to do list!!

Put a plaid/print stripe between two strips of solid then cut the squares on a bit of a angle. Easy. Good use of scraps.

damaquilts 04-16-2012 12:17 PM

Lynda, thanks that is easy and it can really be made any size.

matraina 04-16-2012 02:17 PM

Don't know the name of it but I sure do like the looks of it.

My pleasure! It can be made any size. The key measurement is the width of the center strip. Take your finished block size, divide in half and add 1/4". (You'd normally add 1/2" but since this is sewn at an angle you don't want the full 1/2".) So if you want an 8" finished block, the center strip would be 4 1/4" wide.

I do think you'll waste a lot of fabric with this method so when I make one (it's now on my very long list!) I'm going to make the top and bottom triangles from a rectangle. This will be much easier if I figure out how to trim the corners of the triangles so they line up properly with the central strip. I'll be working on that and will post a "trimmer" when I get it figured out.

I've also been experimenting with colors/values and you can create some really neat effects by varying the values of the darks. Here's an example:
