A friend recently brought in a commercial made Mickey Mouse comforter asking if I would clean and repair a small area that had come un-stitched. The same fabric is on both sides and there are a few stains.
He wants to sell it and wondered if I would give him an idea of it's value. I gave him an appraisers name and number before I even looked at it. Now I'm not sure that's the route to take. I hate to send him to an appraiser and find it's worth very little. Any of you out there with thoughts on this comforter? and how he should go about determining value?

I don't think it has much value. I wouldn't buy a used comforter. Honestly, I'd say give it to Goodwill or Freecycle it.

My gut feel is that it would only have value to perhaps a collector of Disney memorabilia. But then again, these may have been produced by the thousands, so may have very little actual value. I think he would be better off contacting someone who collects Disney stuff to get an idea of value.

I think it would appraise for very little, especially being mended. I think this is one of those things that you wouldn't sell for any $, and no one else would pay any $ for.

LOL I have coordinating sheets in my garage that were my oldest sons. I think they date from about 1978 or 1979.

I would look on ebay for similar comforters and see what they sold for. There is an option to search completed listings. I imagine ebay will be the best market for this type of thing.

As for value, it depends on what someone is willing to pay. With stains, the value will decrease. If it is a comforter with the high loft batting, it may not be from the 70s. The sheet sets I had as a child in the 70s had thermal blankets and coverlets, not comforters. The sheets my kids had in the 90s and more recently have the thick poly comforters.

I suspect you are all correct. I wouldn't give it space. But there have been things on Antique Road Show that I wouldn't look twice at and turned out to be very valuable so I thought it better to get additional opinions before sending him to spend money on an appraiser. Thanks

This is hardly an antique, though. It's not worth your time.

I can't imagine it would be worth more than you'd charge to repair it. If it has stains, I'd list it on the "free" section of craigslist.
