Anyone else trying to fit some quilting between family and long work hours?

On a whim during my first shop hop, I bought a 60 degree angle ruler and some fun border fabric. The table topper pictured only took about an hour to make!

Hint.. I would love other quick gift ideas for teachers and coworkers!!!!

I think those criss cross coaster were fun and easy. I had gotten one in a squishy and loved it. I looked it up and made some myself. They are too cute.

What a clever use of strip sets!!! Beautifully done!!! Love those fabrics :D :D :D

sunnyhope 07-28-2009 03:49 PM

That is sooo cute; would you explain to me how you have done it, how to cut and how much etc?
I d love to make one :)

MollieSue 07-28-2009 05:47 PM

That is really cute!! And you made it in about an hour? Wow!!!
Was it a pattern, or your own idea?

SharonC 07-28-2009 05:57 PM

I love it...table runners are so great to make a quick change to yoru rooms :)
Yours is so pretty...do you have a pattern.

sharon b 07-28-2009 05:58 PM

Very nice! I have some border fabric I bought especially or this purpose!

butterflywing 07-28-2009 06:48 PM

i just LOVE the white foot behind the cute runner. how did you make that foot? was it a kit?

nursie76 07-28-2009 06:51 PM

Very nice. I have a lot of border fabric that would work well for this. Did you use a pattern? The points are so nice and sharp.

Kyiav10 07-29-2009 02:08 AM

That is a cute table runner!!

Very cute runner. Love the sock feet!!

Lisanne 07-29-2009 02:48 AM

<sigh> I thought you could use any fabric for borders. So what is border fabric? (So much I don't know.)

I really like the angled shape of your table topper. If you shortened the length, you could do placemats like that. Maybe with unquilted matching napkins.

reneebobby 07-29-2009 03:00 AM

Very nice table topper I love the dragon flies and the froggies. RIBIT

patricej 07-29-2009 03:05 AM

relaaaaaaaaaaax, Lisanne. you very definitely can use any fabric you like for borders. it just happens that some fabrics are designed especially for use in borders. others are designed so that the inner print is recommended for piecing, while the sides are great for borders you know will coordinate nicely.

if you start a new topic asking for examples and recommendations for recognizing and selecting "border fabrics" i know you'll get a wealth of advice. :D

LBryan, your table topper is a great! Guess who will be stealing this idea the next time she needs a quick-gift idea.

Bevanger 07-29-2009 09:49 AM

beautifully done :D

sewjoyce 07-29-2009 09:52 AM

Love that table topper!!! It's so very cute!

amma 07-29-2009 12:15 PM

Ahhhh ya fooled me!!! I thought it was strip sets
Great idea for using border fabrics 8) 8) 8)

What a cute runner! That polka dot fabric really makes it! Make more!

LBryan13790 07-29-2009 02:22 PM

It is really simple with the 8 inch 60 degree ruler. I have enough material to make a second topper - so I PROMISE to put instructions with pictures here by the weekend!

Patrice, I realize you're a human being, but when I read your post with the "relaaaaaaaaaax," it felt like it was coming from that very relaaaaaxed kitty in your picture, and I just had to laugh.

Once I'm at the point of needing more info about borders, I'll post that question. Right now, I'm struggling with hand piecing blocks, so it'll do me more good later. Very good suggestion, and I won't forget!

littlehud 07-29-2009 08:24 PM

That is beautiful. So bright and sunny. I love it.

LBryan13790 08-01-2009 05:16 PM

Sorry for the delay. My daughter turned 6 complete with party and I had to make a quick present for my boss (shown below)!

After buying about 1 1/2 yards of border fabric that inspires you, decide how to divide your strips. You can make them any width as long as they can create mirror images.

Match the strips (if needed as with the daisies in this set).

Cut two triangles off each end, the first base down and the second base up.

Sew one matching triangle to each end. (Save the four odd triagles.) Then sew the two sides together.

Layer with the backing and batting or a piece of flannel. I used "warm and natural" batting this time.

Quilt in your favorite style - I like to just "SID" on the printed borders. For the long table toppers, I just left the edges raw.

But... using those leftoever triangles, I made a 6-sided round topper like shown on the ruler directions and used bias tape to bind it. It is a really versatile project.

Here is the one I had to make quick Thursday night for my boss! From this fall fabric, I have a leftover strip of fabric because of the way it repeats, and it should make some cute coasters!!

I stated earlier that it takes an hour... but time flies when quilting, and I think that it probably takes longer. I tried to time it, but quilting without interruptions just isn't going to happen with kids!!

LBryan13790 08-01-2009 05:17 PM

All set on the end of this thread!! Oops, I am new to forums and didn't post this right!

Teacup 08-01-2009 07:26 PM

Very cute! I love it.

I've wondered if there has ever been a swap here for table runners. The doll quilt exchange is great fun and has a lot of participants. Could something similar be done for table runners? Set a limit on maximum size? Might be fun to do a seasonal theme so everyone could have something new for fall or winter or spring or summer. Wouldn't have to do angles like this sample if people want to do other shapes. Just something I've been thinking about.

Marcia 08-01-2009 08:07 PM

Great table runners! And thanks for the tutorial.

nursie76 08-01-2009 09:54 PM

Thanks for the tutorial.
I really love both the runners and am amazed at how perfectly your edges matched (where there is a stripe type pattern!) I've got to get one of those rulers!

sewjoyce 08-02-2009 06:07 AM

Thanks so much for the tutorial!

Bring it on! It would be a fun exchange!

Esqmommy 08-02-2009 06:55 AM

Patrice - is there any way to post the tute portion in the tutorials? I want to refer back to this but it'll be long gone before I remember! If it's in the tute's, it'll be there longer, right?

Lainee 08-02-2009 09:54 AM

That turtle fabric is just too cute!!! I'd have a had time cutting it up and would just want to have it around to admire and stroke! Anybody else have problems cutting some pieces of fabric?

Very interesting machine also!!

wvdek 08-02-2009 11:37 AM

Thanks for the tut. Really cute runners. Nice color and pattern selection.

Runner swap might be good after the summer.

nursie76 08-02-2009 11:51 AM

Lainee,

Sometimes I have a problem making that first cut! I too like to just stroke and admire my fabrics lol
