Fusible New York Beauty

1 Attachment(s)
I have been wanting to make a New York Beauty quilt, but really, really don't like PP'ing, so I am doing mine with fusible and machine quilting. Has anyone else tried this? Let me know if you have.

I'm not brave enough! If it looks good to you..... it works! Give it a whirl and let us know how it turns out!

Diane007 06-28-2012 06:06 AM

Ok

What do you mean by fusible?
Will every thing have raw edges?
I do like your colours

Theodora 06-28-2012 06:34 AM

It's so interesting to see a new approach to an intricate pattern. It looks great, have fun with all that zig-zagging!

RDM 06-28-2012 07:01 AM

Love NYB's. It's worth your try. IMO would work best if it's to be a wall hanging and you edge stitch and/or all-over quilting to secure. Brings to mind what I do on McKenna Ryan patterns, so why not? Would appreciate knowing how it works for you.

Kitsie 06-28-2012 07:18 AM

If this is a photo of yours then just go for it! It's very eye-catching and sure seems to be working well! Congratulations

Tartan 06-28-2012 07:45 AM

I like it! I think you've come up with a solution that works for you, so go for it!

Helen S 06-28-2012 08:20 AM

First time for everything! I think it looks great!

dhanke 06-28-2012 08:51 AM

I think it looks terrific! I love the look of New York Beauty, but it's so labor intensive that I've not yet found the time to tackle it. Your method should be a time saver yet it wouldn't sacrifice the look. Will it have the stained glass effect of black "lead" around all of the pieces? I don't know about you, but I prefer to do hours of zig zag stitching around the edges rather than hours of picking out teensy bits of paper.

Quiltngolfer 06-28-2012 09:12 AM

It looks great to me. That's a nice alternative.

pollyjvan9 06-28-2012 10:45 AM

D Hanke, I'm with you, I hate the mess of PPing. I am going to use matching thread and stitch very close to the edge instead of a zig-zag. This is probably going to a wallhanging. Haven't decided on the border yet. And yes it will be outlined with black. I was working on a stained glass wallhanging when I started thinking of doing this New York Beauty.

Diana 007 - I use Wonder Under Light that is fusible on both sides. Fuse Wonder Under to wrong side of fabric, cut your piece and then fuse it in place. I don't do handwork, this is the only kind of applique I do.

Will post photos as I progress.

That looks awesome to me. it is a beauty.

QUILTNMO 06-28-2012 05:28 PM

very nice!!!!

TrenbeathRanch 06-28-2012 06:15 PM

Interesting concept! Hope you post pictures after yours is finished!

Tweety2911 06-28-2012 07:37 PM

Very eye catching. I wonder if all that fusible will make your blocks too stiff? You can just trace and cut 1/2" around the design so it will adhere and that will reduce the bulk and stiffness, yet keep the block soft. I really look forward to seeing your finished project. Your colors are beautiful! Well done!!

pollyjvan9 06-29-2012 04:44 AM

This will be a wallhanging or a table topper so I am not really concerned about the stiffness...and really after a quilt has been used for a while I can't really tell what is inside. I have made so many machine applique quilts for my children and grandchildren and they have never noticed any extra stiffness. Of course, I don't make quilts to enter in shows either. I think that makes a difference. I think I will ask my kids about this.

Beautiful work!!!!

Cindy60545 06-30-2012 03:10 AM

I think your idea is great. As a wallhanging, I would definitely try it. You do such beautiful stain glass I'm curious to see how this one comes out. Go for it!

Sewlmatesister 06-30-2012 04:15 AM

You can purchase a book called "Give and Take" by AQS publishing, written by Daphne Greig and Susan Purney Mark, that teaches you the ins and outs of doing exactly that!!

alfosa421 06-30-2012 04:16 AM

That's lovely-I do a lot of fusible-they have a sewable weight but since I took a paper piecing class I love it. Keep up the good work Great job!

Latrinka 06-30-2012 07:18 AM

Haven't tried it, but it sure is a beauty!

yetta 06-30-2012 07:29 AM

looks beautiful.....

pollyjvan9 06-30-2012 10:33 AM

Sewlmatesister, Thanks! I have never heard of this book, will definitely check it out!

solstice3 06-30-2012 10:33 AM

I have done fusible but also done a very close zig zag (at loss for what you call it) around the edges then quilted

labtechkty 06-30-2012 01:14 PM

I have a fusible pattern for a poppy quilt that I haven't tried yet..will be interested to see what you think of the process...

JoanneS 06-30-2012 02:27 PM

The picture looks good. Please keep us in the loop as you progress on your quilt. I started a NYB 5 years ago, and I only finished 1 block LOL. I wonder if I'll ever go back to it?

gigi4419 06-30-2012 02:42 PM

Nice job! Neat colors!

Blinkokr 06-30-2012 03:18 PM

Just great and thank you for sharing. Never try the fusing
Have a Blessed day

My sewing companion/friend/mentor is addicted to this method and is doing a Dear Jane fusing along happily. If it works for you, go for it!!!!

pollyjvan9 07-04-2012 05:47 AM

SandScraps, Thanks I never thought about doing a Dear Jane with this method. I have always thought it would take me way to long to do a DJ. Now I have something else to think about trying. Thanks

nygal 07-10-2012 06:27 AM

I also love the New York Beauty quilt. I've had a book on it for years..but can't bring myself to make one. I'd sure love to..maybe if I get brave enough I will.

Jammin' Jane 09-18-2012 08:00 AM

It looks fantastic! You go, girl!! :)

btiny36 09-18-2012 08:37 AM

Actually someone here on this board has done it this way...I know I've saved it in my bookmarks...will have to look for the post... Ok it's not the exact block but it gives you the general idea using fusible. Here is a post doing just that with the rise and shine block.

kookey426 09-18-2012 01:34 PM

I made one using Eleanor Burns method..turned out GREAT! I don't like PP either!

pollyjvan9 09-19-2012 06:06 AM

Btiny36, Thanks for pointing out the tutorial. I love her Rise and Shine pattern. Really want to make one. Maybe I will put together a kit for this today and have it ready when I can make something for myself.

Delta 09-19-2012 06:12 AM
