That is going to be a gorgeous quilt. I'm sure you'll be a hit with your DD for making this for her.

I have the blocks all stitched together now, so am ready to start on the inner and outer border. As stated previously, I'm going to use the green fabric for a thin inner border and the light background fabric for a larger outer border and backing. The green will then be used for the binding as well.

I need opinions on the borders. I had initially planned to do a 2" inner green border and a 4" outer border. But when I layed materials next to the blocks to get a visual on it, the inner border of 2" looks too big to me (see pic below). So I tried it with a 1" inner border a 5" outer border and it looks better to me. The binding on either one would be about 1/2". What do y'all think? Which one do you like better, the 2" / 4" combination or the 1" / 5" combination?

I agree with you Eddie, I like the 1"/5" best. I love the border material you chose.

Beautiful job! You don't have to adopt me but you can put me on your Christmas list if you want!!!

Thanks again for the kind words! :)

And I have finished the quilt top! Yea! :D I decided to split the difference between using a 1" inner border or a 2" one and went with a 1.5" instead. I think it looks just about right. I decided to extend the inner border through the outer border to the quilt edge to continue the trellis theme of the quilt. Also, I used the scraps to create small pinwheel blocks for the corners. Next, on to quilting it!

Eddie: This turned out really pretty. Looks so soft and inviting. What are you using for the back? Just curious.

Question: Is the author of your pattern book Nicky and Pam Lintott?

I'll be machine quilting it, "stitch-in-the-ditch". I want to get a little more experienced before I try free-motion quilting.

I'm using the same small pink print fabric that was used for the outer border.

Thanks! I'm machine quilting it, in the ditch. I've got all the main crossways quilted tonight, so just need to go back and fill in the quilting now. I hope to finish it up this weekend.

Something delicate, and feminine about that and I love it! My Dad is lame for never making me one. LOL j/k, but it would have been nice.
Very special, Eddie.

Sheree from Chicago 06-11-2009 08:17 PM

Love your fabric choices!

hereca622 06-12-2009 09:05 AM

Great Job, Eddie. The borders and pinwheels finish it off nicely. I am the first quilter in my family for generations. If I had a quilt that was made by my parent or grandparent, I would cherish it. I hope that your daughter knows how lucky she is to receive such a gift. My family has been wrapped in my quilts for years. It always makes me smile.

Happy Quilting from TX,
Helen

Ëddie:
The quilt turned out just beautiful. You have a great eye for color and I love how the binding tied in with the squares on the border and how you brought the pink out onto the border. I know you said you used the same floral pink for the back. Just love it! So soft and snuggly looking. Glad your daughter Olivia liked it too. Thanks for posting the final result.
The label turned out great too. Did you do this one or did your wife make it for you.

tuesy 06-13-2009 07:29 PM

I've started this evening on a quilt for my wife. It's the Saratoga Star pattern by Touchwood Quilt Design and the materials are a hydrangea theme. I'll start a thread tomorrow with pics of the fabrics.
