I just got back from Wallyworld... We have 3 with in 10miles of my home.
2 still carry fabric and 1 does not.. Of course it is the one we prefer to shop at.
Anyway, the one which is our least favorite has the better fabric selections. And I got 7 yards for 2.44 each... I got 4 yards of this "cheater" fabric. 8 5' rows. I can't wait to finish the quilt I am on so I can cut into this stuff....
I might have to go back and get it in blue.

G
just looked at the photos after posting... They are much darker and richer in person.

The cheater fabric are on either side. I wanted to show all 8 strips.

Pretty fabric. I have seen cheater cloth but never tried it. Take lots of pictures and let us know how you like it.

Ok my turn what is cheater fabric?

Quilting G 02-08-2009 02:32 PM

Cheater is what I call it. If you look real close to the fabrics on either side you will see a dark line in-between the stripes. This fabric has 8 different coordinated pattern running the length of the fabric. Each 5.5 inches wide. There is no guessing if these will go together. They also had a few bolts of the individual patterns. I am still a newbie but plan on using the stripes as borders on one side of the quilt (the center will be about an 18 inch square of one of the patterns. The other side will be 5 inch block patchwork of all the fabric. I think I will be able to create a quilt quickly… “Cheating maybe, maybe not.” I just found out my other mother (best friends mother had part of her foot removed due to diabetes) and I need to get her something quick…

I call those fabrics "running eighths", but I'm not sure where I heard it- I didn't make it up. (At least I don't think I did.)

I saw these same prints at our Walmart and they had them in blue and green, too. And they had yardage of some of the prints, too. They are very pretty! I put the green one in my cart, but then I was good and put it back.

I had got some like that at Joann's that had teal and brown prints, but I wasn't overly crazy about it. I ended up with a lot of waste that wasn't really very useable, like skinny strings and a couple prints I thought were ugly. (I made my teal and brown quilt that I posted in the pictures section out of those, plus some other stuff.) If I had gotten it at the price you did, I would have been a little happier about the wasted stuff- it was a lot more expensive at Joann's.

Have fun with it! Show us pictures of what you make!

My store has a gorgeous green, i didn't buy any this is my big bill month. Joanns has it at a bigger price  It is pretty nice stuff :D

Barbm 02-09-2009 05:49 AM

I agree Ruth- Joann's has stuff from Wal-Mart. I just bought a 1/2 yard of a fabric I bought ages ago (let's see the baby is now 4). I loved it and thought I'd never see if again. Jaonn's had it! Cost was much more than Wal-Mart though.

I'm not sure- but do you think the fabric from Wal- Mart is now thicker- like a better quality? More like Joann's?

grammo013 02-09-2009 09:46 AM

Some of it is better than Joann's

Lisa T 02-09-2009 09:51 AM

I have noticed lately that some of the Joann's fabric is pretty bad. I have started watching what I buy there. And often they have the same fabric as Walmart for more money! But they do have some nicer stuff that you can't get at Walmart. I am careful about both now.

I like that at my lqs I don't have to worry, but it's just so much more expensive!

Quilting G 02-09-2009 10:56 AM

I got yardage in two of the prints. I am planning one quick lap quilt.
18 inch square with with 4 5 inch borders with corner stones and use all of the patterns in the borders/cornerstones, for the backing a 5 inch patch work with all of the patters on the back. I think it will be quick but have to finish the one I am working on now. I will post updates...
Since I thought it would be quick and because it was cheap I bought more then I thought I would need and hope to get 2 quilts out of it.

I saw it in blue and love that one also. If this works well I will go back for it when my cash stash is replinshed... It runs our so quick...

Thats why I like to buy in person...gotta feel the goods. Some fabric makes me shutter when I touch it. joanns buys their red tag fabric as seconds, some is good buys some not. Markdown is when it comes in. Its good to get it when they have a 50% off sale. Lately I have got some good stuff at wallys' :D

Quilting G 02-09-2009 11:39 AM

Ruth,
You avitar is what inspired the 5 inch patch work... I just noticed it now.

I love the quilt in your avitar quilt!!

camillacamilla 02-09-2009 12:10 PM

Oh my...I just bought that very same fabric at Walmart the other day too! I am using it for applique flowers. They all coordinate really well, so the applique flowers go together, without being too matchy.

sewmuch 02-10-2009 07:59 AM

I bought 2 yds of different fabric at Wallyword in another town over the weekend. Very reasonable and good quality, not excellent tho. That said I noticed that some was USA made and more from China. China's quality was better than ours, go figure. Anyway, the clerk had to put those detector things they put on shoes and jeans, etc. so you can't steal them, on each piece of fabric. Never had that done before. :!:

Quilt4u 02-10-2009 08:10 AM

Very nice.

I too have noticed that some of Wallyworld's/Joann's material is better and some is really shoddy.

I'm going to be starting a D9P for my 7 year old ds. His favorite thing in the world is Thomas the Train. I found the highest quality material at Walmart of all places! The fabric was normally 4.44, but this bolt was on sale for 3.50; close to a dollar off a yard....and STILL cheaper than the large chain outfits here in town.

There is a store here that didn't use to have good fabric, that I keep hearing is better and better, so I might just have to go over there and check it out.

What is a tossed 9 patch?

M

Rommel 02-11-2009 03:19 PM
