Grandma's Folly, a salute to my mother.....

If you are of a "certain age", you will connect with this story. When I was a kid in the 40's &50's, my mother made all my clothes. She was a wonderful seamstress, but everything had to be matchy matchy. In those days you didn't wear blue & green together, dots and stripes, red and pink, etc. As I was putting this quilt together, all I could think of was my mother and how she would not approve of the colors and patterns. Thus the name.

I used a pattern from Green Fairy Quilts called "Strippin' Time". The idea is to use one entire jelly roll to the very last inch. My jelly roll was Moda "Hoopla". It didn't have any good solid colors to make the blocks stand out, so I added Moda Marbles Citrus. Then I just long armed it with squiggles and curliques to add to the fun and sponteneity (sp?) of the quilt. The binding and the strippy backing is what was left of the jelly roll sewn together. Hope you like it. Oh, it is 45"x58".

I love your fabric combinations. So many interesting designs and fun colors to add texture to the quilt. Good thing we're not still in the 50's. Peggy

I love it but I too remember. "blue and green should never be seen, unless they're in the washing machine". LOL

I love it and it looks like it was fun to do. My colour palette seems to be getting bolder the older I get.:D

Thanks guys. I don't even know why I bought that jelly roll. I am getting more daring in my old age. The pattern was really fun to do. There was an awful lot of cutting involved, and choosing where to put the colors to best advantage. I am trying to stretch myself to do things I wouldn't normally do. This will probably end up being a charity quilt at some point. I have about 6 or 7 ready to gift someone.

Such a happy quilt. It makes me smile. It's funny how the times have changed peoples perspectives on color. I always say just look at nature...all colors go together. It works and you did a great job.

I love your quilt, the name of the quilt and the reason behind it : ) We've come a long way - and I am so glad. I love to mix plaids, florals, stripes, polka dots...my poor mother would cringe at what I put together. But she would be proud that I share her passion for sewing and crafting.
